Organization Overview

This role is pivotal in managing the connections between the South Central Climate Adaptation Science Center (CASC) and its Tribal collaborators in New Mexico. The coordinator will engage closely with representatives from various Tribes, Pueblos, and inter-tribal entities to create and facilitate educational programs on climate adaptation and associated subjects. Responsibilities include supporting communities involved in adaptation efforts and working to identify and mitigate obstacles to the execution of Tribal adaptation strategies.


Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement engagement strategies tailored to Tribal partners in New Mexico, guided by the South Central CASC Tribal Engagement Program team.
  • Lead research and educational initiatives aimed at enhancing understanding of climate impacts and adaptation measures.
  • Identify external resources to assist with specific projects and foster collaborative opportunities through research partnerships.
  • Coordinate with the CASC Sustainability Scientist Manager and Climate Adaptation Planner on regional projects involving Indigenous communities.
  • Work with the South Central CASC to ensure that research and data products are designed to meet the specific needs of Tribal partners.
  • Conduct extensive travel within New Mexico to meet with partners and stakeholders.
  • Supervise undergraduate interns as needed.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Geography, Environmental Sustainability, Native American Studies, or Regional Planning, along with a minimum of 24 months of relevant project management experience.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Proficient in computer applications, including PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
  • Capacity for independent decision-making and judgment.
  • Ability to effectively plan, coordinate, and prioritize tasks.
  • Advanced analytical and evaluative thinking skills.

Certifications:
  • Valid driver's license for travel to partnership meetings.

Working Conditions

  • Proficient use of a computer.
  • Manual dexterity required.

Preferred Qualifications

Departmental Preferences:
Master's degree in relevant fields, along with additional experience in vulnerability assessment, climate adaptation planning, or education and training related to climate science. Demonstrated cultural competence and ethics in working with Indigenous communities, along with an understanding of sovereignty, Tribal governance, and culturally-based decision-making processes.


Supervision: No supervisory responsibilities.
