Job Summary

The University of Oklahoma is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Archaeological Collections Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our museum staff, you will be responsible for inventorying, cataloging, and digitizing archaeological collections, as well as providing general support to the Archaeology Collections Manager/NAGPRA Coordinator and Curator of Archaeology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inventory and rehouse archaeological collections, ensuring accurate and thorough documentation
  • Work with sensitive NAGPRA collections, participating in consultations and maintaining confidentiality
  • Create catalog records in a database management system for archaeological collections and associated documentation
  • Assist with project coordination, including planning and implementing collection management projects
  • Provide care and maintenance of collections, including date and records management
  • Identify, prepare, tag, and catalog specimens for new and existing collections
  • Meet with visitors to the collection, responding to patron requests and providing tours to the public
  • Perform various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field
  • Strong communication and organizational skills, with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to handle small items with extreme care and maintain a safe working environment
  • Proficiency in MS Office software and experience working with databases
  • Ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with tribal representatives and organizations
  • Knowledge of acceptable museum practices and standards for collection care, collection management, documentation, conservation, and registration methods

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Anthropology with an emphasis on archaeology or physical anthropology
  • Archaeological experience in the field, museum, or lab setting
  • Museum experience, especially working with archaeological collections
  • Working knowledge of NAGPRA legislation and an interest in deepening this knowledge
  • General knowledge of the pre-contact and historical archaeology of the Plains or Southeast US

Working Conditions

  • Ability to lift 35lbs and climb ladders
  • Sitting for long periods and engaging in repetitive motions
  • Ability to handle small items with extreme care and maintain a safe working environment
