Responsibilities Overview

The Senior Systems Operations Manager plays a crucial role within the Application Services Division, overseeing the management of the Authority's Software Portfolio. This involves executing tasks to maintain existing applications and software infrastructure while also deploying new applications and software solutions, particularly focusing on the Aveva PI System (previously known as OSISoft).

In this position, the Senior Systems Operations Manager will leverage technical expertise to implement, support, maintain, and enhance the software infrastructure. Project Management skills will be essential to achieve these goals within a framework guided by policies, procedures, business plans, functional strategies, and organizational priorities, with oversight from IT Management and the IT Advisory Committee.

The role emphasizes support for NYPA's Asset Health Monitoring Application suite, which encompasses Aveva PI, GE Smart Signal, GP Strategies Eta Pro, and GE Asset Performance Monitoring, among others.

To ensure the smooth operation of existing applications, the Senior Systems Operations Manager will efficiently manage the resolution of production issues, comply with all IT change management and incident reporting protocols, and confirm that applications are functioning correctly following any modifications. Additional responsibilities include installing upgrades and patches, and when necessary, analyzing, designing, coding, and implementing changes to enhance functionality or adapt to evolving business processes. When applications, underlying software infrastructure, or hardware reach the end of their lifecycle, the Senior Systems Operations Manager will be responsible for identifying and implementing replacement solutions to meet business objectives.

As technology and the utility sector evolve, so too must the solutions implemented to fulfill NYPA's business requirements. The impact of this role is significant, ensuring operational efficiency, facilitating the enhancement of business processes, and providing critical information for improved management decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and contribute to all technological aspects of application development and support, including reporting, interfaces, database design, patching, upgrades, and enhancements.
  • Contribute to the overall architecture of existing enterprise application systems and the implementation of new applications, ERP solutions, and platform APIs.
  • Collaborate with architects, developers, business analysts, and QA analysts to design, develop, and test applications.
  • Assist in the creation of information systems blueprints, design patterns, and templates for best-in-class software development, ensuring high levels of software reuse and migration towards service-oriented architecture (SOA).
  • Support cloud solution resources, including IaaS and PaaS.
  • Develop and assess plans and criteria for various projects and activities, evaluating the feasibility and soundness of proposed proofs of concept or solutions.
  • Communicate and coordinate with other team leads, business leadership, and management to ensure appropriate integration of processes and modules across the organization.
  • Develop and maintain technology roadmaps and assist in product roadmap development.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge in application architecture, design, development, and support, particularly in large-scale enterprise systems implementations.
  • Ability to design complex software systems that are scalable, maintainable, and extensible.
  • Proficiency in software engineering.
  • Experience leading the implementation and support of real-time systems and enterprise applications.
  • Capability to lead medium to large teams.
  • Strong problem-solving skills in the software development process, with the ability to influence others towards solutions.
  • Knowledge and understanding of cybersecurity policies, as well as public and private cloud environments.
  • Experience in project management, resource estimation, and schedule management.

Education, Experience, and Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

Overnight travel to various locations may be required.

The New York Power Authority is dedicated to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The estimated salary range for this position is $108,000 to $148,000. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidate's relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
