Leverage your knowledge of the Victorian Aboriginal Community to offer guidance and support to Corrections Victoria.Ongoing, Full-Time Positions available within a dedicated and high-performing team in the Victorian Public Service.VPS Grade 3: $74,580 - $90,558 plus superannuation.

This position is designated for Aboriginal individuals, classified under 'special measures' of section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010. Only Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates are eligible to apply.

The Aboriginal Wellbeing Officer (AWO) role was established in response to the Victorian Aboriginal Justice Agreement and the findings of the 1991 Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.

AWOs play a crucial role in Corrections Victoria's commitment to reducing the over-representation of Aboriginal individuals in the criminal justice system and ensuring equitable justice outcomes for Aboriginal Victorians.

As an AWO, you will engage directly with Aboriginal individuals in custody, providing cultural, spiritual, and wellbeing support while coordinating cultural activities and programs. This role involves participating in the case management of Aboriginal prisoners, collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team to facilitate successful reintegration into the community.

You should possess a strong understanding of case management and a comprehensive knowledge of the Victorian Aboriginal Community, including its culture and the challenges it faces.

Aboriginal Wellbeing Officer positions are available at various prison locations throughout Victoria and are integral to multi-disciplinary offender services teams. AWOs lay the groundwork for all cultural programs that support rehabilitation and reintegration, enhancing outcomes for Aboriginal prisoners by:

Providing ongoing welfare, advocacy, and support for Aboriginal prisoners.Demonstrating effective and sensitive communication with members of the Victorian Aboriginal community.Assisting prisoners in accessing suitable pre and post-release programs.Helping Aboriginal prisoners reconnect and maintain ties with their families, community organizations, and other support systems through guidance and referrals.Leading the coordination of cultural activities, including NAIDOC events and Aboriginal-specific programs within the prison.
