About the Role

The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Aboriginal Wellbeing Officer to join our team. As an Aboriginal Wellbeing Officer, you will play a critical role in providing support and advice to Corrections Victoria, working closely with Aboriginal prisoners and their families to promote rehabilitation and reintegration into the community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide ongoing welfare, advocacy, and support for Aboriginal prisoners, including coordinating cultural activities and programs.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with Aboriginal community organizations and stakeholders to ensure effective support and services are provided to Aboriginal prisoners.
  • Assist prisoners with access to pre and post-release programs, including education, employment, and housing support.
  • Lead the coordination of cultural activities, including NAIDOC events and Aboriginal-specific programs within the prison.
  • Work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team to support successful transition back to the community.
Requirements
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Victorian Aboriginal Community, both society and culture, and the issues impacting on it.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with members of the Victorian Aboriginal community.
  • Understanding of case management and experience working with Aboriginal communities.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize multiple tasks and responsibilities.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
