Position Overview

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is at the forefront of addressing intricate energy and environmental challenges through innovative, multidisciplinary approaches. Key Responsibilities

We are in search of a highly skilled scientist to become part of our dynamic team focused on energy storage research. The primary aim is to explore groundbreaking technologies in high energy density lithium-sulfur batteries. The successful candidate will:

  • Develop liquid electrolytes with optimal solvation structures utilizing novel solvents, salts, and additives.
  • Design and fabricate lithium metal anodes featuring 3D structures and protective membranes to ensure stable cycling of lithium-sulfur batteries.
  • Characterize electrochemical and morphological properties and investigate the interphases between electrodes and electrolytes.
  • Prepare research manuscripts for publication and present findings at national and international conferences.
  • Contribute innovative ideas for ongoing funded research projects.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must possess a PhD from an accredited institution, awarded within the last five years or expected within the next eight months.

Preferred Qualifications:

A proven track record of publications in reputable journals and the ability to collaborate effectively in a team-oriented environment are essential. Candidates should also demonstrate a strong commitment to safety practices.

Additionally, applicants should have:

  • A Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Polymeric Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or related fields.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: fundamental materials synthesis for advanced battery applications, development of non-aqueous electrolytes, lithium metal protection, and sulfur electrodes.
  • Extensive hands-on skills in material synthesis, battery assembly, and testing.
  • Prior experience with organic electrolytes and lithium-sulfur systems is advantageous.
