Position Overview


Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is in search of a skilled scientist or engineer to contribute to research and development initiatives focused on enhancing non-destructive evaluation (NDE) technologies and methodologies. These advancements are crucial for material characterization, component inspection, and structural health monitoring.

The ideal candidate will collaborate with experienced scientists, playing a pivotal role in testing, assessing, and innovating advanced NDE techniques. The goal is to integrate these methodologies into national security initiatives, energy and environmental sectors, and advanced manufacturing processes.

Key projects may involve confirmatory research on industrial NDE technologies utilized in critical infrastructure inspections, partnerships with industry to develop advanced signal and data analysis for new NDE methods, and collaboration with data scientists to create machine learning models for flaw detection in various applications.

We are particularly interested in candidates who operate at the intersection of NDE and cutting-edge data science techniques.

Responsibilities


The successful candidate will:

  • Conduct R&D activities grounded in the principles of physics, exploring the structure and behavior of materials and energy interactions.
  • Engage in diverse research areas, including optical, acoustic, and electromagnetic system design.
  • Design, model, and prototype measurement and detection systems.
  • Advance detection technologies for both domestic and international applications.
  • Perform complex data analysis to derive insights from experimental results.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Developing and executing safe laboratory experiments involving various material samples.
  • Collaborating effectively within interdisciplinary teams.
  • Communicating findings through presentations and technical writing, including reports and proposals.
  • Creating test plans and operational procedures.
  • Understanding materials science, particularly in relation to fracture mechanics and microstructural analysis.
Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications:
BS/BA with 5+ years of relevant experience -OR- MS/MA with 3+ years of relevant experience -OR- PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
PhD in physics, materials science, electrical engineering, metallurgy, or mechanical engineering. Experience with ultrasonic guided wave techniques and magnetic flux leakage inspection methods is highly desirable.

Familiarity with physical modeling and data analysis tools is advantageous, as is experience applying NDE methods across various materials.

Additional Information


This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and will undergo a federal background investigation.
