Key Responsibilities

We are seeking a Lead Research Engineer in Power Systems Resilience to spearhead pioneering research focused on enhancing the resilience of power systems. This role encompasses power system modeling, risk assessment, and the formulation of mitigation strategies aimed at ensuring a secure and resilient electric grid. The ideal candidate will be a seasoned expert in bulk power system operations, possessing industry experience, an innovative approach, and a fervor for applied power systems research.

Essential duties include:

  • Conducting research and applying expertise in power systems for restoration and resilience planning.
  • Acting as a principal investigator and project lead on multiple significant initiatives with the potential for national impact.
  • Leading the capture, planning, and technical execution of large, complex, interdisciplinary projects with implications at both laboratory and national levels.
  • Providing technical guidance in establishing scientific and technical objectives.
  • Publishing as a primary or contributing author on influential publications or reports.
  • Representing PNNL and our research as an invited speaker at national conferences and forums.
  • Collaborating with a broad network of experts across national laboratories, academia, industry, and technical societies.
  • Mentoring mid- to senior-level staff within PNNL and among collaborators to facilitate knowledge transfer across the organization and into the industry.

The successful candidate will report to the Energy Systems Resilience Group Leader and the Resilience Team Leader regarding overall staff performance, operational discipline (including maintaining training qualifications and procedural compliance), and project execution. They will also work closely with project management to ensure timely and budget-compliant delivery of project work.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and 7+ years of relevant experience -OR-
  • Master's degree and 5+ years of relevant experience -OR-
  • PhD with 3+ years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in conducting all-hazards and contingency analysis studies.
  • Proficiency in performing generation, transmission, and distribution protection studies using software such as ASPEN, ETAP, SKM, or similar tools.
  • Expertise in developing relay protection schemes and validating relay settings.
  • Experience in project delivery within the electric sector.
  • History of writing successful proposals and defining technical scopes for complex, interdisciplinary projects.
  • Technical knowledge in power system modeling, real-time simulation, analysis, dynamics, and/or control.
  • Experience presenting technical work at national forums and conferences.
  • A broad network of external collaborators across national laboratories, academia, industry, and technical societies.

Additional Information

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and will undergo a Federal background investigation to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
