Position Overview

The Transition Counselor at Norman Howard School Inc. plays a vital role in guiding students and their families through the complexities of academic, vocational, and career planning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide counseling support to students in special education settings, focusing on their academic, vocational, and college aspirations.
  • Design and execute transition programs and activities that encompass career interest assessments, job skill enhancement, and self-advocacy techniques.
  • Conduct age-appropriate transition evaluations and annual reviews for students aged 12 and above, assessing their strengths, challenges, and future plans.
  • Gather and maintain resources related to college and vocational opportunities, assisting students with application processes and financial aid.
  • Serve as a liaison with external agencies and school district personnel, participating in monthly transition-related meetings.
  • Monitor students' academic progress to ensure they are on track for graduation.
  • Collaborate with educational staff to address students' academic and emotional needs.
  • Review and summarize the Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for graduating students.
  • Attend meetings related to student support and transition planning.
  • Work with administration to develop and manage class schedules, ensuring compliance with graduation criteria.
  • Organize and facilitate events that expose students to various career paths through discussions and guest speakers.
  • Coordinate financial aid workshops for parents of high school students.
  • Create and distribute a transition newsletter for families.
  • Arrange and supervise student visits to educational institutions and career-related events.
  • Provide information and support for standardized testing, ensuring accommodations are met.
  • Maintain professional development through various educational experiences and collaborations.
  • Engage in school-sponsored events and activities.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Ability to uphold confidentiality regarding student information.
  • Strong professional integrity and ethical standards.
  • Familiarity with New York State graduation requirements.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of special education practices and accommodations.
  • Exceptional written communication skills.
  • Flexibility in addressing diverse student needs.

Minimum Requirements:

Required:

  • New York State Certification as a School Counselor; National certification is preferred.

Preferred:

  • Five years of counseling experience at the high school level, ideally with diverse learning needs.
  • Experience as a work-based learning coordinator is a plus.

Work Schedule:

  • Flexible hours to accommodate meetings and school events.
  • Teachers are expected to report by 7:30 AM on school days.

Compensation:

  • Salary range of $48,253 to $61,197 annually, commensurate with experience.
