Position Overview

The Academic Transition Specialist at Norman Howard School Inc. plays a crucial role in guiding students and their families through the complexities of academic, vocational, and college planning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide counseling to students in special education settings, focusing on their academic, vocational, and college aspirations.
  • Design and execute a transition curriculum that includes career interest assessments, job skill development, and self-advocacy training, delivered in an integrated manner across various high school grades.
  • Conduct Age-Appropriate Transition Assessments and annual reviews for students aged 12 and above, addressing their strengths, challenges, interests, and future plans.
  • Gather and maintain a comprehensive collection of college and vocational resources to assist students in their post-secondary pursuits.
  • Serve as the liaison between the school and external agencies, attending relevant meetings to ensure effective collaboration.
  • Monitor students' academic progress to ensure they are on track to meet graduation requirements.
  • Collaborate with educational staff to address students' academic and social-emotional needs.
  • Review Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for graduating students and prepare Exit Summaries.
  • Participate in meetings related to student transitions for grades 9-12.
  • Work with administration to develop and maintain a master schedule that meets graduation criteria.
  • Organize transition-focused events that expose students to various career opportunities through discussions and guest speakers.
  • Coordinate informational sessions for parents regarding scholarships and financial aid.
  • Create and distribute a transition newsletter for students and their families.
  • Facilitate student visits to vocational programs, colleges, and career-related events.
  • Provide information and support for standardized testing, ensuring accommodations are met.
  • Enhance professional skills through ongoing education, collaboration, and participation in professional organizations.
  • Engage in school-sponsored activities and events.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding student information.
  • Exhibit a high level of professional integrity.
  • Knowledge of New York State graduation requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
  • Understanding of special education principles and accommodations.
  • Proficient written communication skills.
  • Flexibility in addressing diverse student needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required:

  • New York State Certification as a School Counselor; National certification preferred.

Preferred:

  • Five years of counseling experience at the high school level, particularly with diverse learning needs.
  • Experience as a work-based learning coordinator is advantageous.

Work Schedule:

  • Flexible hours to accommodate meetings and school events.
  • Mandatory reporting by 7:30 AM on school days.

Compensation:

  • Annual salary range of $48,253 to $61,197, commensurate with experience.
