Position Overview

The Transition Counselor at Norman Howard School Inc. plays a vital role in guiding students and their families through the intricacies of academic, vocational, and career planning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide counseling support to students in special education, focusing on their academic, vocational, and college aspirations.
  • Design and execute a transition curriculum that encompasses career interest assessments, job skill enhancement, and self-advocacy techniques, delivered in an integrated manner across various high school grades.
  • Conduct comprehensive Age-Appropriate Transition Assessments and annual reviews for students aged 12 and above, evaluating their strengths, challenges, interests, and future goals.
  • Gather and curate resources related to college, vocational training, and career opportunities for student use, assisting them with college applications and financial aid processes.
  • Serve as the liaison between the school and external agencies, including ACCES VR and local school district counselors, participating in monthly transition meetings.
  • Monitor and ensure that secondary students are on track to meet graduation requirements.
  • Collaborate with educational staff to address students' academic and emotional needs through effective strategies and management plans.
  • Review and summarize the Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for graduating seniors.
  • Participate in Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings for students in grades 9-12.
  • Assist in the development of a master schedule in conjunction with school administration, ensuring compliance with graduation criteria.
  • Organize and facilitate transition-related events that expose students to various career paths through discussions and guest speakers.
  • Coordinate informational sessions for parents regarding scholarships and financial aid opportunities.
  • Create and distribute a transition newsletter aimed at keeping parents and students informed.
  • Oversee and accompany students on visits to vocational programs, colleges, and career-related events.
  • Provide information and support for SAT/ACT registration and accommodations, acting as a proctor when necessary.
  • Maintain professional development through ongoing education, collaboration with colleagues, and participation in professional organizations.
  • Engage in school-sponsored activities and events to foster community involvement.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Ability to uphold confidentiality regarding student information and achievements.
  • Exhibit a high standard of professional integrity.
  • Familiarity with New York State graduation pathways and requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills to effectively manage behavioral situations and collaborate with families.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and planning capabilities.
  • Knowledge of special education principles, including necessary accommodations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in written communication.
  • Flexibility in addressing diverse student needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required:

  • New York State Certification as a School Counselor; National certification preferred.

Preferred:

  • Five years of experience in high school counseling, particularly with diverse learning profiles.
  • Experience as a work-based learning coordinator is a plus.

Work Schedule:

  • Flexibility to accommodate meetings with parents/guardians and school events.
  • Mandatory reporting by 7:30 AM on school days.

Compensation:

  • Annual salary range of $48,253 to $61,197, commensurate with experience.
