Develops and monitors quality control and test procedures, quality improvement and equipment and shares in the routine work of the section as necessary to maintain competency and to meet staffing levels. Meets regulatory requirements for the assigned technical area. Oversees and coordinates preparation of samples for examination and performance of testing following established procedures. Correlates knowledge and understanding of theory and technical elements of testing to solve problems and answers questions effectively and efficiently. Develops and carries out the activities of the Laboratory Chemical Hygiene plan. Meets regulatory requirements for the chemical hazards of the laboratory. Oversees and coordinates the policies and procedures for chemical safety, waste and use of chemicals. Correlates knowledge and understanding of theory and technical elements to solve problems and answers questions effectively and efficiently. Oversees and coordinates technical function and activities of the surgical pathology section while ensuring adherence to regulations and service to laboratory customers. Ensures accuracy and timeliness of daily work. Monitors work schedules and assigns personnel to assure critical areas are covered and work is completed accurately and meets established turnaround time standards. Monitors reagent and supply inventories for area of responsibility so as not to overstock or exhaust supplies. Initiates purchase requisitions as appropriate. Updates all procedures in a timely fashion and on an annual basis. Communicates updates and assures staff are following procedures. Assures regulatory standards within area of responsibility are met. Oversees training of new staff and completion of competency assessments on an annual basis. Troubleshoots difficult or unusual instrument or procedural issues and calls for service within the terms of the service contract. Reviews all maintenance, quality control and records to assure established procedures are followed and the proper functioning of laboratory equipment. Takes appropriate corrective action. Reviews QC slides on an ongoing basis and takes appropriate action on any QC not within established guidelines. Performs tests requiring special scientific or complex skills and other duties as assigned within scope of practice. Participates in the daily work as necessary to assure competency is maintained and as workload demands. Fulfills the role of laboratory chemical hygiene officer: Works with administrators and other employees to review, update and maintain an appropriate chemical hygiene plan on an annual basis Oversees annual chemical inventory by monitoring procurement, use, waste management and disposal of chemicals used by the laboratory Obtains SDS and maintains current and archived SDS Reviews all laboratory chemical safety policies and creates or modifies policies and procedures. Prepares educational material on new or revised regulatory standards regarding chemical safety and hazards Acts as a network wide consultant for chemical related topics Assists in investigations of all laboratory chemical accidents and injuries as requested Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of their license. What we need from you Education: 2 year/Associate Degree in Histology or other NYS licensure qualifying degree, required Experience: Minimum one year experience in standard histology laboratory methodologies, required Licensure/Certifications: Licensure by NYS SED as a Clinical Laboratory Technician or Histotechnician, or licensure eligible with a limited permit or limited license as a Clinical Laboratory Technician or Histotechnician, required Limited Permit is granted to individuals that meet the educational requirements for licensure except for the licensing examination which must be taken within one year from the issuance of a limited permit.
