Role Summary:
The Peer Support Specialist will work closely with the Emergency Medical Team (EMT) and Clinician to provide immediate assistance to individuals in crisis. This role involves evaluating needs and facilitating access to mental health resources, including collaboration with law enforcement and hospital personnel to ensure effective care delivery.

The Peer Support Specialist is expected to adhere to the Pro-Act Crisis Intervention Model and other evidence-based practices while utilizing screening tools to guide decision-making. This position emphasizes building a supportive relationship with clients, fostering hope, and identifying barriers to treatment while connecting them to essential resources.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver direct crisis intervention and management services.
  • Maintain timely and accurate documentation in line with agency standards.
  • Participate in clinical meetings and training sessions.
  • Handle billing processes for Medi-Cal and Medicare.
  • Assist in tracking program outcomes and ensure follow-up care for all clients.
  • Engage in community outreach with various stakeholders.
  • Perform additional clinical duties as assigned by the Director of Crisis Services.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess experience in crisis management and demonstrate a commitment to the principles of crisis intervention, particularly within diverse communities.
  • Personal experience with mental health challenges, homelessness, or co-occurring disorders is required.
  • A minimum of one year of relevant experience in supporting clients during mental health crises.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, along with effective time management abilities.
  • Capability to establish supportive relationships with clients.
  • Proficiency in crisis intervention techniques, including de-escalation strategies.
  • Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of employment (training provided).
  • Completion of the Peer Support Specialist certification through the State of California within the first six months.
  • Willingness to work outdoors during shifts and travel between crisis locations.
  • Ability to engage respectfully with a diverse community and team members.
  • Openness to learning about different perspectives and self-awareness regarding various attributes.
  • Compliance with all legal and ethical standards, including reporting requirements.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.

Physical Requirements:
The physical demands of this role include the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and maintain stamina during shifts. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
