Role Summary:
The Peer Support Specialist will work in collaboration with the Emergency Medical Team and Clinician to respond to urgent needs, assisting in the evaluation and facilitation of care for individuals in crisis. Utilizing various resources, including law enforcement and healthcare professionals, the Peer Support Specialist will deliver prompt and effective mental health support.

This role requires adherence to the Pro-Act Crisis Intervention Model and other evidence-based practices, ensuring a structured approach to crisis management. The Peer Support Specialist will engage clients in connecting with resources that promote hospital diversions and support their recovery journey. Essential skills include the ability to build rapport, inspire hope, assess urgent needs, and identify treatment barriers while linking clients to necessary resources.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide direct crisis intervention and management services.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in line with agency standards.
  • Participate in clinical meetings and training sessions.
  • Handle billing processes for Medi-Cal and Medicare.
  • Assist in tracking program outcomes and ensure follow-up care for all clients.
  • Engage in community outreach with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Perform additional clinical duties as assigned by the Director of Crisis Services.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in crisis management and a commitment to the principles of crisis intervention, with experience serving diverse communities.
  • Personal lived experience with mental health challenges, homelessness, or co-occurring disorders is required.
  • A minimum of one year of relevant experience in supporting clients during mental health crises.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with strong time management abilities.
  • Capacity to build supportive relationships with clients.
  • Proficiency in crisis intervention techniques, including de-escalation.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required within 30 days of employment (training provided).
  • Completion of the Peer Support Specialist certificate through the State of California within the first six months is mandatory.
  • Willingness to work outdoors, travel between crisis locations, and maintain physical activity throughout shifts.
  • Ability to engage respectfully with a diverse community and team members, demonstrating humility and openness.
  • Commitment to understanding various perspectives and self-awareness regarding important social attributes.
  • Compliance with all legal and ethical mandates, including reporting requirements.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.

Physical Demands:
The physical requirements of this position include the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and the capacity to remain present and engaged in crisis situations. Additional demands may include exposure to infectious agents and the need for physical and emotional stamina.
