The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a skilled Lab Specialist to join our dedicated team in the field of addiction research. This role is crucial for advancing our understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying addiction, particularly focusing on the biological differences in susceptibility based on sex.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct experiments utilizing rat models to explore addiction behaviors.
  • Assist in achieving the laboratory's objectives under the guidance of the Principal Investigator.
  • Oversee the maintenance of animal protocols, ensuring compliance among all personnel involved in animal handling and conducting regular laboratory inspections.
  • Interview, train, and supervise undergraduate research assistants, ensuring proper animal care, husbandry, and surgical procedures are followed.
  • Work both independently and collaboratively, documenting all research findings accurately while supporting fellow lab members.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Lab Specialist

  • Education: Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years in a relevant field; 6 years of lab-related experience may substitute for the degree.

Lab Specialist Intermediate

  • Education: Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience: At least 6 years in a laboratory technician capacity; a Master's degree may replace required experience, with 9 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of a degree.

Lab Specialist Senior

  • Education: Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience: 9 years in a laboratory technician role; a Master's or Terminal degree plus 4 years of relevant experience may substitute, with 12 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of a degree.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in at least two of the following areas: addiction research, behavioral studies, neuropharmacology, surgical techniques, Western blotting/qPCR/RNA-sequencing, and bioinformatics.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires extended periods of standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. It also involves keyboarding and other bench work, as well as animal procedures that necessitate fine motor skills.

This is a restricted position based on project needs, funding availability, and performance. The position will remain open until filled. Background checks will be conducted on all new hires prior to employment. A pre-employment health screening is mandatory for this role.
