Charlottesville, Virginia, United States Commonwealth of Virginia Full time

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a Laboratory Technician or a Research Lab Specialist within the field of pharmacology, contingent upon the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.

This laboratory is dedicated to investigating clinical samples from individuals with autoimmune disorders and utilizing mouse models to explore how metal metabolism can be manipulated to enhance immune responses. By employing unbiased genetic CRISPR-Cas9 screening techniques in immune cells, such as T cells, the laboratory identifies metabolic genes that are vital for their survival and functionality during immune attacks on healthy tissues. The overarching goal is to leverage these foundational insights to develop targeted therapies that favor anti-inflammatory cells over inflammatory ones in patients afflicted with autoimmune conditions.

A distinctive focus of this laboratory's research is the metabolism of iron within immune cells, given the critical role of iron in physiological processes and the potential hazards associated with its excess, which can lead to ferroptosis. Investigating how variations in iron metabolism, including conditions like iron deficiency anemia or iron overload disorders, may influence immune system functionality is a significant area of research.

This position presents an excellent opportunity for recent graduates seeking research experience prior to pursuing advanced degrees such as PhD, MD, or MD-PhD programs. Technicians and specialists in this laboratory will have the opportunity to contribute to scholarly manuscripts, thereby gaining invaluable experience.
