Position Overview:
The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Laboratory Research Associate within the Division of Hematology and Oncology. This position is integral to supporting laboratory-based research focused on molecular genetics, particularly in the areas of DNA repair, DNA recombination, and CRISPR-mediated gene editing.

Key Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Conducting and assisting with experiments related to cell culture, Western blotting, DNA and RNA isolation, as well as PCR and quantitative PCR.
  • Collaborating with senior scientists to develop methodologies and protocols for ongoing laboratory projects.
  • Assisting in the collection and electronic entry of research data.
  • Managing the ordering of laboratory supplies.
  • Performing routine maintenance and upkeep of laboratory facilities.
  • Executing standard laboratory data analysis and procedures.
  • Independently preparing solutions and reagents.
  • Taking ownership of a personal research project.
  • Completing additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
For Laboratory Research Associate Level 2:
- Education: Associate's degree
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years in a laboratory setting, with consideration for relevant educational background in lieu of experience. Preferred experience in molecular biology or a closely related scientific field.

For Laboratory Specialist:
- Education: Bachelor's degree
- Experience: 3 years of relevant experience, or 6 years of laboratory-related experience accepted in lieu of a degree. Preferred experience in molecular biology or a closely related scientific field.

For Laboratory Specialist Intermediate:
- Education: Bachelor's degree
- Experience: 6 years in a laboratory technician role, with a Master's degree substituting for required experience. 9 years of laboratory-related experience accepted in lieu of a degree. Preferred experience in molecular biology or a closely related scientific field.

Required Skills and Abilities:
- Strong problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail.

Ability to analyze and organize work procedures, plan and execute tasks or experiments, and interpret and report findings. Capability to conduct laboratory experiments with minimal supervision. Proficiency in data collection and sample handling. Understanding of laboratory processes and procedures. Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Physical Requirements:
This position may require extended periods of standing and squatting during experiments, as well as tasks involving keyboarding and fine motor skills.
