The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a skilled Laboratory Technician to join our research team focused on addiction studies. This role will be integral in advancing our understanding of the neurobiological factors influencing addiction, particularly regarding sex differences in susceptibility.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct experiments utilizing rodent models to investigate addiction.
  • Assist in achieving the laboratory's objectives under the guidance of the Principal Investigator.
  • Oversee the maintenance of animal research protocols, ensuring adherence to ethical standards and compliance from all personnel involved in animal care.
  • Manage, train, and supervise undergraduate research assistants, ensuring proper animal husbandry and surgical techniques are followed.
  • Work collaboratively and independently, documenting all research findings accurately and supporting fellow lab members as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Laboratory Technician

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience: A minimum of 3 years in a laboratory setting, or 6 years of related experience may substitute for the degree.

Intermediate Laboratory Specialist

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience: At least 6 years in a laboratory technician capacity; a Master’s degree may replace some experience requirements. 9 years of lab-related experience may substitute for the degree.

Senior Laboratory Specialist

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience: 9 years in a laboratory technician role; a Master’s or Terminal degree plus 4 years of experience may substitute for some requirements. 12 years of lab-related experience may replace the degree.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in at least two of the following areas: addiction research, behavioral science, neuropharmacology, surgical techniques, Western blotting/qPCR/RNA-sequencing, and bioinformatics.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires extended periods of standing and squatting while performing experiments or caring for animals. It also involves keyboarding and other laboratory tasks that require fine motor skills.

This is a restricted position contingent upon project needs, funding availability, and performance. The position will remain open until filled, and background checks will be conducted on all new hires.
