Position Overview:
The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Laboratory Specialist within the Department of Ophthalmology. This position is integral to the Center for Advanced Vision Science, where you will collaborate with a dynamic research team focused on understanding and treating severe retinal disorders.
Key Responsibilities:
As a Laboratory Specialist, you will be responsible for providing expert technical support in a laboratory setting. Your duties will include:
- Evaluating and refining research methodologies and protocols in alignment with established objectives.
- Conducting small animal surgeries as required.
- Assisting researchers with data manipulation, computation, and analysis utilizing specialized statistical software, while compiling and maintaining comprehensive reports.
- Performing extensive literature reviews and library research.
- Instructing academic sections on laboratory methods, procedures, and safety protocols.
- Adapting general methodologies to fulfill specific research needs.
- Managing small animal care, including handling and husbandry, with a willingness to learn if necessary.
- Overseeing data security, equipment functionality, and compliance with regulatory standards.
- Completing additional tasks as assigned by the supervising authority.
Minimum Qualifications:
For Laboratory Specialist:
- A Bachelor’s degree.
- A minimum of three years of relevant experience, or six years of laboratory-related experience in lieu of a degree.
- A Bachelor’s degree.
- At least six years of relevant experience, or nine years of laboratory-related experience in lieu of a degree. A Master’s degree may substitute for required experience.
Physical Requirements:
This role requires the ability to stand and squat for extended periods while conducting experiments or caring for laboratory animals. Proficiency in keyboarding and performing intricate procedures is essential.
