POSITION SUMMARY:


The South Portland School Department is seeking an Academic Program Manager to enhance and oversee the operations of our adult education initiatives.

The Academic Program Manager will collaborate with the Director to ensure the effective management of adult education programs, which encompass:
English language learning, academic advancement, and workforce development.

This role involves the creation and coordination of innovative programs, supporting educators, facilitating student recruitment and retention, providing academic advising, managing enrollment, overseeing data processes, and handling marketing and logistical aspects of educational programs.

This is a grant-supported, year-round position.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:


Partner with the Director of Adult Education to design and implement new programs focusing on English language proficiency, digital skills, high school equivalency, and job training.

Engage with educators and community stakeholders to manage program logistics.
Work with staff to ensure curriculum meets established standards where applicable.

Assist educators in accessing professional development opportunities, ensuring they have the necessary resources for effective teaching, and aligning with program objectives.

Oversee the student intake and assessment processes, including staff scheduling, space allocation, and direct student interaction.
Collaborate with administrative personnel to delegate tasks and projects as required.
Directly support students to address their academic needs and connect them with relevant community resources.
Identify and reach out to students who are frequently absent to explore alternative support options.
Conduct surveys to gauge student needs and maintain confidentiality.
Administer assessments such as HiSET and CASAS.
Assist in organizing student recognition events, including celebrations and graduations.
Participate in local and statewide meetings and professional development opportunities as necessary.
Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:
A bachelor's degree is required; a master's degree is preferred.
Experience working with diverse adult populations in educational contexts is essential.
Strong empathy and understanding of students' educational challenges are crucial.
Proven ability to develop and manage educational programs.
Experience in data collection and analysis is beneficial.
Excellent attention to detail along with strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary.
Creative problem-solving skills to enhance program effectiveness are valued.
A flexible and adaptable approach is important as the South Portland Adult Education program evolves.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS:
Cultural competence in engaging with diverse adult learners and community partners is important.
Familiarity with adult education assessments and programs such as HiSET, CASAS, and ACCUPLACER is advantageous.
Proficiency in one or more languages, such as Portuguese, French, or Lingala, is a plus.
Some evening hours may be required, typically on a pre-agreed schedule.

Applicants must be willing to undergo a Criminal History Record Check (CHRC) through the Maine Department of Education.
