Senior Systems Engineering Lead for Strategic SATCOM

Our Defense Systems Group (DSG) provides analytical decision support to senior officials regarding space architectures, policy, strategy, developmental planning, and system-of-systems engineering. This unique group not only directly assists major clients, including Air Force Space Command and U.S. Strategic Command, but also delivers a wide array of services across the national space enterprise.
The ESS Program Office is in search of a dedicated Senior Project Leader specializing in Systems Engineering - Acquisition and Systems Engineering. This role involves collaboration within an integrated program office comprising Space Force, Aerospace, and contractor personnel to support the acquisition of the Evolved Strategic SATCOM (ESS) system. The selected candidate will leverage engineering expertise to support systems engineering, integration, and testing strategies throughout the prototyping, development, and deployment phases of the program, ensuring alignment and integration among government entities, ESS segment contractors, and other strategic partners.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary representative for the working group, advising ESS program leadership on system requirements and engineering practices.
- Provide insights to Aerospace leadership and clients regarding risks, issues, opportunities, and related mitigation strategies.
- Ensure effective execution of systems integration across space, ground, and crypto segments of the ESS program.
- Apply systems engineering methodologies to assist clients in developing acquisition documents necessary for space, ground, and crypto acquisition efforts.
- Define requirements for the ESS System, including the development and approval of capability documents and interface control documents.
- Evaluate mission trades among segments and products for system-level design reviews to identify optimal system architectures.
- Maintain productive relationships with customer leadership and contractors, creating technical materials and presenting to key stakeholders.
- Lead the Aerospace team in executing systems engineering, integration, and testing responsibilities, coordinating subject matter experts to provide technical guidance.
- Mentor team members, offering technical support in both engineering duties and program office responsibilities.
- Oversee program staffing budgets, identifying and recruiting experts to support systems acquisition activities.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of 12 years of progressively responsible engineering or scientific experience in government programs.
- Proven experience in systems engineering, requirements development, and program acquisition.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and communicate effectively with interdisciplinary teams.
- Capability to balance technical details with broader programmatic perspectives.
- Ability to adapt in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
- Experience working across government programs in systems engineering and acquisition.
- Skills in conducting risk and schedule assessments.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related STEM field.
- Willingness to travel as required.
- Active Secret clearance is necessary; U.S. citizenship is required for security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in engineering, science, or a related field.
- Experience with satellite communication systems and command and control systems.
- Understanding of government space system acquisition processes.
- Project management experience with a focus on system-level optimization.
- Familiarity with Aerospace culture and coordination with Engineering & Technology Group (ETG).
- Active TS/SCI clearance or eligibility to obtain one.
