Senior Systems Engineering Lead for Strategic SATCOM

The Defense Systems Group (DSG) provides analytical decision support to senior leaders regarding space architectures, policy, strategy, developmental planning, and threat mitigation, shaping future missions within the national security space domain. DSG's unique position at Aerospace enables direct support to major clients, including Air Force Space Command and U.S. Strategic Command, while also delivering a wide array of services across the national space landscape.
The ESS Program Office is in search of a dedicated Senior Project Leader specializing in Systems Engineering - Acquisition and Systems Engineering. This role involves collaboration within an integrated program office, working alongside Space Force, Aerospace, and contractor personnel to support the acquisition of the Evolved Strategic SATCOM (ESS) system. The selected candidate will leverage engineering expertise to enhance systems engineering, integration, and testing strategies throughout the prototyping, development, and deployment phases of the program, ensuring cohesive integration among government entities, ESS segment contractors, and strategic partners.
Work Model - This position primarily requires in-office engagement in classified environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the representative for the working group, advising the customer and ESS program leadership on system requirements and engineering practices.
- Provide insights to Aerospace leadership and customers regarding risks, issues, opportunities, and corresponding mitigation strategies.
- Ensure successful execution of systems integration efforts across space, ground, and crypto segments of the ESS program.
- Apply systems engineering methodologies to assist in the development of acquisition documents necessary for space, ground, and crypto initiatives.
- Define requirements for the ESS System, including the creation and approval of capability documents and interface control documents.
- Evaluate mission trades for system-level design reviews to identify optimal architecture solutions.
- Maintain effective relationships with customer leadership and contractors, including the development of technical materials for presentation to stakeholders.
- Lead the Aerospace team in executing systems engineering, integration, and testing responsibilities.
- Mentor team members, providing technical guidance in both engineering duties and program office functions.
- Oversee program staffing budgets and assist in recruiting subject matter experts for acquisition activities.
Qualifications for Success
- 12+ years of progressively responsible engineering or scientific experience in government programs.
- Expertise in systems engineering, requirements development, and program acquisition.
- Proven track record of leading interdisciplinary teams.
- Ability to balance technical details with broader programmatic perspectives.
- Capacity to thrive in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
- Strong communication skills with diverse groups.
- Experience in risk and schedule assessments.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related STEM field.
- Active Secret clearance required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in engineering, science, or a related field.
- Experience with satellite communication systems and command/control systems.
- Familiarity with government space acquisition processes.
- Project management experience with system-level optimization capabilities.
- Experience in MILSATCOM program offices.
- Understanding of Aerospace culture and collaboration with Engineering & Technology Group (ETG).
- Active TS/SCI clearance or eligibility to obtain one.
