Job Summary:

The Senior Academic Advisor will provide direct academic guidance to Bachelors and Master's level students in the School of Social Work, enhancing their academic experience and supporting retention and completion rates. This role includes administration and coordination of essential academic advising programs and initiatives, as well as training and supervising new advisors.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct academic advising through various modalities including in-person, virtual, phone, and email.
  • Guide students on academic topics such as degree requirements and course selection, assisting them in setting and achieving educational and career goals.
  • Teach students to track their academic progress and utilize available resources effectively.
  • Monitor the academic progress of assigned students, providing proactive outreach for timely assistance.
  • Verify degree progress, manage holds, and approve necessary forms to ensure student progression.
  • Analyze student data and transcripts to provide informed guidance.
  • Document advising sessions accurately in the university's system.
  • Oversee advising best practices and contribute to program improvement and assessment.
  • Prepare reports and engage in data-driven decision-making processes.
  • Represent the School of Social Work and academic advising community to various stakeholders.
  • Assist in training new academic advisors and may supervise a small team.
  • Stay informed about relevant academic programs and support services.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Social Work or a related field with four years of relevant experience in a human service field or higher education.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Four years of progressive academic advising experience at a public R1 University.
  • Leadership or supervisory experience in higher education.
  • Experience in implementing and assessing student development programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse student populations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Effective academic advising practices, university policies, and resources available for academic advising.
Skills in:
  • Student advocacy, communication, organization, problem-solving, and customer service.
Ability to:
  • Lead and collaborate effectively, manage sensitive information, and utilize technology for reporting and tracking.
