Position Overview:

The Academic Advisor III role focuses on providing comprehensive academic guidance to both Bachelor’s and Master’s level students within the School of Social Work. This position is essential in enhancing the educational journey, promoting student retention, and facilitating successful completion of academic programs.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver academic advising through various channels including in-person, virtual, phone, and email communications.
  • Assist students in understanding degree requirements, selecting relevant courses, and achieving their educational and career aspirations.
  • Empower students to make informed academic choices by teaching them to monitor their academic progress and utilize available resources effectively.
  • Proactively monitor the academic performance of assigned students, providing timely support and interventions as needed.
  • Conduct degree progress verifications, manage holds, and approve necessary documentation to ensure smooth student progression.
  • Analyze student data, transcripts, and placement results to provide tailored advising.
  • Document advising sessions in the student information system following best practices.
  • Oversee the implementation of advising best practices and contribute to ongoing program assessment and improvement.
  • Prepare analytical reports and engage in data-driven decision-making processes.
  • Represent the School of Social Work and the academic advising community in discussions with various stakeholders.
  • Support the training and onboarding of new academic advisors and supervise a small team as needed.
  • Stay informed about relevant academic programs and support services, making appropriate referrals for students.
  • Participate in professional development activities and meetings.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • A Master’s degree in Social Work or a related field, coupled with four years of relevant experience in a human services or higher education context.
Preferred Experience:
  • Four years of progressive experience in academic advising at a public R1 institution.
  • Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience in higher education.
  • Experience in developing and assessing student development initiatives.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of students and colleagues.

  • Strong advocacy for students and commitment to providing exceptional service.

Abilities:

  • Capacity to lead and collaborate effectively, manage sensitive information, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in utilizing Microsoft Office Suite and student information systems.
