Job Summary:

The Senior Academic Advisor will provide direct academic guidance to Bachelors and Master's level students in the School of Social Work, enhancing their academic journey and promoting student retention and completion. This role includes administration and coordination of essential academic advising programs and initiatives, as well as training and supervising new academic advisors.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct academic advising for current and prospective students through various modalities including in-person, virtual, phone, and email.
  • Offer guidance on academic topics such as degree requirements and course selection, assisting students in setting and achieving their educational and career goals.
  • Empower students to make informed academic decisions by teaching them how to track their academic progress and utilize available resources.
  • Monitor the academic progress of assigned students, providing proactive outreach and assistance as needed.
  • Verify degree progress, manage holds, and approve necessary forms to ensure timely student progression.
  • Analyze student data, transcripts, and placement results.
  • Document advising sessions in the student information system following best practices.
  • Oversee the implementation of advising best practices and communicate program requirements effectively.
  • Prepare reports and engage in data-driven decision-making processes.
  • Represent the School of Social Work and academic advising community to various stakeholders.
  • Assist in training and onboarding new academic advisors and supervise a small team.
  • Maintain knowledge of applicable federal, state, and university policies and procedures.
  • Stay informed about relevant academic programs and support services, providing appropriate referrals to students.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Social Work or a related field with four years of relevant work experience in a human service field or higher education.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Four years of progressive academic advising experience at a public R1 University.
  • Leadership or supervisory experience in higher education.
  • Experience in implementing and assessing student development programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse student populations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • High-impact academic advising practices, university policies, and resources available through academic advising associations.
Skills in:
  • Student advocacy, communication, organization, problem-solving, and customer service.
Ability to:
  • Lead and collaborate effectively, maintain confidentiality, manage multiple responsibilities, and utilize Microsoft Office programs proficiently.
Other Requirements:

This position is security sensitive and subject to provisions of the Texas Education Code.
