Position Overview:

This role is integral to the Space Exploration Group (JSEG) supporting the NASA EM32 Welding & Manufacturing (W&M) team under the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) contract.

Key Responsibilities:

The primary focus of this role is the manufacturing of large aluminum aerospace structures utilizing both friction stir welding and fusion welding techniques. Responsibilities include:

  1. Developing welding methodologies, procedures, and the application of welding technology to address fabrication challenges, leveraging knowledge of production specifications, metal properties, and engineering principles.
  2. Conducting research and development to innovate and test new welding processes and techniques, enhancing existing equipment, and discovering new welding phenomena.
  3. Preparing comprehensive technical documentation resulting from research and development efforts.
  4. Establishing welding protocols to guide production and welding teams, addressing specification constraints and complex material processes.
  5. Evaluating advancements in the welding sector for potential application to current production challenges.
  6. Overseeing technical personnel in inspections to ensure adherence to established welding protocols and standards.
  7. Exchanging insights and providing technical guidance on welding issues.
  8. Performing experimental welding to assess new equipment, techniques, and materials.
  9. Leading specific customer welding development and manufacturing projects as the project lead engineer.
  10. Assisting other EM32 W&M Team clients in understanding and resolving challenges related to their welding manufacturing processes.

The selected candidate will serve as a welding expert for manufacturing projects, collaborating closely with JSEG and customer engineers and technicians. They will provide professional consultation and technical expertise to address complex challenges in design, development, analysis, integration, evaluation, testing, and verification of welding processes.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering or a related discipline from an ABET-accredited institution is required. Typically, candidates will possess a Master's degree with a minimum of 23 years of experience, or a Bachelor's degree with at least 25 years of experience. The selected candidate must be eligible to operate customer-owned vehicles in support of work activities and maintain a valid driver's license and automobile liability insurance.

Essential experience includes:

  1. Demonstrated expertise in developing and qualifying large-scale aerospace friction stir welding processes.
  2. Experience with Gas Tungsten Arc Welding and/or Variable Polarity Plasma Arc welding on aerospace materials such as aluminum, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium.
  3. Hands-on experience with machine tool-like equipment involving electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.

Familiarity with the following specifications and standards is required:

  1. ANSI/AWS D17.1/D17.1M:2017-AMD2, "Specification for Fusion Welding for Aerospace Applications."
  2. ANSI/AWS D17.3/D17.3M:2021, "Specification for Friction Stir Welding of Aluminum Alloys for Aerospace Applications."

Previous experience with the following specifications is preferred but not mandatory:

  1. NASA-STD-6016, "Standard Materials and Processes Requirements for Spacecraft."
  2. NASA-STD-5006, "General Fusion Welding Requirements for Aerospace Materials Used in Flight Hardware."
  3. MSFC-SPEC-3679, "Process Specification – Welding Aerospace Hardware."

Work Environment:

This position involves a mix of office (40%) and industrial welding/manufacturing development laboratory/machine shop (60%) environments. The role requires effective interaction with colleagues, management, and clients, along with clear and accurate communication skills.

Physical Requirements:

The role necessitates sitting for extended periods during meetings and report writing, as well as standing and walking in a lab environment with safety protocols. The ability to lift and maneuver materials and equipment weighing up to 40 lbs is also required.

Attendance:

Normal working hours are Monday through Friday. Occasional overtime may be necessary to meet project milestones.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, make informed decisions, and exercise sound judgment is crucial. Professional grooming and attire must align with safety standards.
