Position Overview:

This role is part of the Space Exploration Group (JSEG) supporting the NASA EM32 Welding & Manufacturing (W&M) team under the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) contract.

Key Responsibilities:

The main focus of this role is the fabrication of large aluminum aerospace structures utilizing both friction stir welding and fusion welding techniques. The responsibilities include:

  1. Developing welding methodologies, procedures, and the application of welding tools to address fabrication challenges, leveraging knowledge of production specifications, material properties, and engineering principles.
  2. Conducting research and development to innovate and assess new welding processes and procedures, enhance existing or create new welding equipment, and explore new welding phenomena.
  3. Compiling technical documentation resulting from research and development efforts.
  4. Establishing welding protocols to guide production and welding teams concerning material processes and specifications.
  5. Assessing advancements in the welding sector for potential integration into current production methods.
  6. Leading and coordinating technical teams to perform inspections ensuring compliance with established welding standards.
  7. Exchanging insights and providing technical guidance on welding-related matters.
  8. Executing experimental welding to evaluate new tools, techniques, and materials.
  9. Acting as project lead engineer for specific customer welding development and manufacturing initiatives.
  10. Assisting other EM32 W&M Team clients in understanding and resolving issues related to their welding processes.

The selected candidate will serve as a welding expert for manufacturing projects, collaborating closely with JSEG and customer engineers and technicians. They will provide professional consultation and technical expertise to address complex challenges related to welding processes.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering or a related discipline from an ABET-accredited institution is mandatory. Typically, candidates will possess a Master’s degree with a minimum of 23 years of experience, or a Bachelor’s degree with at least 25 years of experience. The selected individual must be able to obtain and maintain the necessary permissions to operate customer-owned vehicles as part of their duties.

Additionally, the candidate must have demonstrated experience in developing and qualifying large-scale aerospace friction stir welding processes. Familiarity with Gas Tungsten Arc Welding and/or Variable Polarity Plasma Arc welding on aerospace materials such as aluminum, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium is preferred. The candidate should be adept at working with machine tool-like equipment involving electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.

Work Environment:

This position will involve a mix of office and industrial environments, requiring effective interaction with colleagues, management, and clients. The role may necessitate travel, though infrequently.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to sit for extended periods during meetings and while performing engineering tasks. The role also requires standing and walking in a lab environment, adhering to safety protocols.

Attendance:

Regular attendance is essential, with minimal overtime expected to meet project deadlines.

Other Essential Functions:

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound judgment is crucial.
