Position Overview:
This role is part of the Space Exploration Group (SEG) supporting the NASA EM32 Welding & Manufacturing (W&M) team under the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) contract.
Key Responsibilities:
The main focus of this role is the fabrication of large aluminum aerospace structures utilizing both friction stir welding and fusion welding techniques. The responsibilities include:
- Developing welding methodologies, procedures, and equipment applications for metal fabrication, leveraging knowledge of production specifications and material properties.
- Conducting research and development to innovate and refine welding processes and equipment, as well as to investigate new welding phenomena.
- Preparing technical documentation resulting from research and development activities.
- Establishing welding guidelines for production personnel, addressing specification requirements and complex material processes.
- Assessing advancements in the welding field for potential integration into current practices.
- Leading and coordinating inspections to ensure compliance with established welding standards.
- Exchanging technical insights and advice regarding welding issues.
- Performing experimental welding to evaluate new technologies and materials.
- Acting as project lead engineer for specific customer welding and manufacturing projects.
- Assisting clients in resolving challenges related to their welding processes.
The ideal candidate will guide engineering and scientific problem-solving, ensuring tasks are completed effectively and on schedule. They will possess strong problem-solving skills, the ability to define project objectives, and the capability to organize and innovate within diverse activities.
Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering or a related discipline from an ABET-accredited institution is required. Typically, this role necessitates a Master's degree with a minimum of 8 years of experience, or a Bachelor's degree with at least 10 years of relevant experience.
The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain authorization to operate customer-owned vehicles and must possess a valid driver's license and insurance.
Experience in large-scale aerospace friction stir welding processes is essential, along with familiarity with Gas Tungsten Arc Welding and/or Variable Polarity Plasma Arc welding techniques on aerospace materials. Previous experience with the following specifications is required:
- ANSI/AWS D17.1/D17.1M:2017-AMD2, "Specification for Fusion Welding for Aerospace Applications."
- ANSI/AWS D17.3/D17.3M:2021, "Specification for Friction Stir Welding of Aluminum Alloys for Aerospace Applications."
Work Environment:
This position will involve a mix of office work (40%) and hands-on activities in an industrial welding/manufacturing laboratory (60%).
Essential Functions:
Regular attendance is crucial, and the candidate must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, demonstrating sound judgment and decision-making skills.
Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
