Position Overview:
This role is integral to the Space Exploration Group (JSEG) supporting the NASA EM32 Welding & Manufacturing (W&M) team under the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) contract.
Key Responsibilities:
The primary focus of this position involves the fabrication of large aluminum aerospace structures utilizing both friction stir welding and fusion welding techniques. The selected candidate will:
Develop and refine welding techniques, procedures, and the application of welding equipment to address fabrication challenges, leveraging knowledge of production specifications and the properties of metals and alloys.
Conduct research and development to innovate and assess new welding processes and equipment, enhance existing methods, and explore new welding phenomena.
Prepare comprehensive technical reports documenting research findings and development progress.
Establish detailed welding procedures to guide production teams, ensuring compliance with specifications and addressing complex material processes.
Perform experimental welding to assess new techniques and materials.
Lead specific customer welding development and manufacturing projects as the project lead engineer.
Assist other EM32 W&M Team clients in troubleshooting and resolving welding manufacturing issues.
The successful candidate will work under the mentorship of senior engineers and scientists, gradually developing professional expertise and applying standard engineering techniques in a collaborative environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering or a related discipline from an ABET-accredited institution is required. Candidates must be capable of obtaining and maintaining the necessary permissions to operate customer-owned vehicles.
Additionally, candidates must possess a valid driver's license and automobile liability insurance, and successfully complete a defensive driving training course.
Relevant work experience will be assessed against ESSCA contract engineering labor categories.
Safety Certifications:
The selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain essential safety certifications, including Welding Safety. Demonstrated experience in large-scale aerospace friction stir welding processes is essential.
Experience with Gas Tungsten Arc Welding on aerospace materials such as aluminum alloys (preferably 2219 and 2195), stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium is highly desirable.
Hands-on experience with machine tool-like equipment involving electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical systems is required.
Standards and Specifications:
Familiarity with the following specifications and standards is mandatory:
- ANSI/AWS D17.1/D17.1M:2017-AMD2, "Specification for Fusion Welding for Aerospace Applications"
- ANSI/AWS D173/D173M:2021, "Specification for Friction Stir Welding of Aluminum Alloys for Aerospace Applications"
Previous experience with additional specifications such as NASA-STD-6016 and NASA-STD-5006 is preferred but not required.
