Position Overview:
This role is integral to the Space Exploration Group (SEG) supporting the NASA EM32 Welding & Manufacturing (W&M) team under the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) contract.
Key Responsibilities:
The primary focus of this role is the fabrication of large aluminum aerospace structures utilizing both friction stir welding and fusion welding techniques. The responsibilities include:
- Developing welding techniques, procedures, and the application of welding equipment to address fabrication challenges, leveraging knowledge of production specifications and the properties of metals and alloys.
- Conducting research and development to innovate and test new welding processes, improve existing equipment, and modify current methods.
- Preparing technical documentation resulting from research and development activities.
- Establishing welding procedures to guide production personnel on specifications, material processes, and complex alloy fabrication.
- Evaluating advancements in the welding field for potential application to current challenges.
- Directing technical personnel in inspections to ensure compliance with established welding standards.
- Exchanging ideas and providing technical guidance on welding matters.
- Performing experimental welding to assess new techniques and materials.
- Leading specific customer welding development and manufacturing projects.
- Assisting other EM32 W&M Team customers in resolving welding manufacturing challenges.
The selected candidate will play a crucial role in engineering and scientific problem-solving, providing direction and mentorship. They will monitor work to ensure compliance with requirements and deadlines, demonstrating the ability to solve problems, define project objectives, and organize tasks effectively.
Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering or a related discipline from an ABET-accredited institution is required. Typically, candidates will possess a Master’s degree with a minimum of 8 years of experience, or a Bachelor’s degree with at least 10 years of experience.
The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain the necessary permissions for operating customer-owned vehicles and must possess a valid driver's license and automobile liability insurance.
Experience in developing and qualifying large-scale aerospace friction stir welding processes is essential. Familiarity with Gas Tungsten Arc Welding and/or Variable Polarity Plasma Arc welding on aerospace materials is preferred. Candidates should have experience with the following specifications:
- ANSI/AWS D17.1/D17.1M:2017-AMD2
- ANSI/AWS D17.3/D17.3M:2021
Experience with additional specifications is desirable but not mandatory.
Work Environment:
This position involves a mix of office (40%) and industrial welding/manufacturing development laboratory (60%) environments. Effective interaction with colleagues, management, and clients is essential.
Physical Requirements:
Candidates must be able to sit for extended periods during meetings and while performing engineering tasks. The role requires standing, sitting, and walking in a lab environment, necessitating the use of safety equipment.
Attendance:
Regular attendance is crucial, with a standard workday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Minimal overtime may be required to meet project milestones.
Other Essential Functions:
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and make sound decisions is essential. Grooming and attire must be appropriate for the role and not pose safety risks.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
