Position Overview:

This role is integral to the Space Exploration Group (JSEG) supporting the NASA EM32 Welding & Manufacturing (W&M) team under the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) contract.

Key Responsibilities:

The primary objective of this role is to manufacture large aluminum aerospace structures utilizing both friction stir welding and fusion welding techniques. The evaluation of education and experience relevant to this position will be conducted from this perspective. The main responsibilities include:

  1. Developing welding techniques, procedures, and the application of welding equipment to address fabrication challenges, leveraging knowledge of production specifications, material properties, and engineering principles.
  2. Conducting research and development to innovate and assess new welding processes and procedures, enhance existing equipment, and explore new welding methods and phenomena.
  3. Preparing technical documentation stemming from research and development activities.
  4. Establishing welding protocols to guide production personnel regarding specifications, material processes, and pre- and post-weld requirements, particularly involving complex alloys and critical joints.
  5. Assessing advancements in the welding field for potential application to current challenges.
  6. Leading and coordinating technical teams to ensure compliance with established welding standards.
  7. Sharing insights and providing technical guidance on welding-related matters.
  8. Conducting experimental welding to evaluate new technologies and materials.
  9. Serving as the project lead engineer for specific customer welding and manufacturing development initiatives.
  10. Assisting other EM32 W&M Team clients in understanding and resolving welding manufacturing challenges.

The selected candidate will act as a welding expert for manufacturing projects, collaborating closely with JSEG and customer engineers and technicians. They will provide professional consultation and technical expertise to address complex challenges related to welding design, development, analysis, integration, evaluation, testing, and verification.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering or a related discipline from an ABET-accredited institution is required. Typically, candidates will possess a Master's degree with a minimum of 23 years of experience, or a Bachelor's degree with at least 25 years of experience. The candidate must be eligible to operate customer-owned vehicles for work-related activities and must maintain a valid driver's license and automobile liability insurance.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in developing and qualifying large-scale aerospace friction stir welding processes. Familiarity with Gas Tungsten Arc Welding and/or Variable Polarity Plasma Arc welding on aerospace materials such as aluminum (preferably alloys 2219 and 2195), stainless steel, superalloys, and/or titanium using both manual and mechanized techniques is desirable. The candidate should be capable of hands-on work with machine tool-like equipment involving electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.

Experience with the following specifications and standards is required:

  • ANSI/AWS D17.1/D17.1M:2017-AMD2, "Specification for Fusion Welding for Aerospace Applications."
  • ANSI/AWS D17.3/D17.3M:2021, "Specification for Friction Stir Welding of Aluminum Alloys for Aerospace Applications."

Experience with the following specifications and standards is preferred but not mandatory:

  • NASA-STD-6016, "Standard Materials and Processes Requirements for Spacecraft."
  • NASA-STD-5006, "General Fusion Welding Requirements for Aerospace Materials Used in Flight Hardware."
  • MSFC-SPEC-3679, "Process Specification – Welding Aerospace Hardware."

Work Environment:

This position will involve a mix of office (40%) and industrial welding/manufacturing laboratory (60%) environments. Effective interaction with colleagues, management, and clients is essential.
