Position Overview:

This role is integral to the Space Exploration Group (JSEG) supporting the NASA EM32 Welding & Manufacturing (W&M) team under the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) contract.

Key Responsibilities:

The primary focus of this role is the fabrication of large aluminum aerospace structures utilizing both friction stir welding and fusion welding techniques. The following responsibilities are essential:

  1. Develop welding methodologies, protocols, and the application of welding apparatus to address fabrication challenges, leveraging knowledge of production specifications, metal properties, and engineering principles.
  2. Conduct research and development efforts to innovate and assess new welding techniques and protocols, enhance existing or create new welding equipment, and investigate new welding phenomena.
  3. Compile technical documentation resulting from research and development activities.
  4. Establish welding protocols to guide production and welding teams regarding specification constraints, material processes, and pre- and post-weld heating requirements involving complex alloys and critical joint fabrication.
  5. Assess advancements in the welding sector for potential application to current production challenges.
  6. Lead and coordinate technical personnel in inspections to ensure adherence to established welding protocols and standards.
  7. Share insights, information, or provide technical guidance on welding-related issues.
  8. Conduct experimental welding to evaluate new tools, techniques, and materials.
  9. Act as project lead engineer for specific customer welding development and manufacturing initiatives.
  10. Assist other EM32 W&M Team clients in understanding and resolving issues related to their welding manufacturing processes.

The selected candidate will serve as a welding expert for manufacturing projects, collaborating closely with JSEG and client engineers and technicians. The candidate will provide professional consultation, technical expertise, and specialized skills as needed to address complex challenges related to the design, development, analysis, integration, evaluation, testing, and verification of welding and manufacturing processes.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering or a related discipline from an ABET-accredited institution is required. Typically, educational qualifications are equivalent to a minimum of a Master’s degree with at least 23 years of experience, or a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 25 years of experience. The candidate must be eligible to operate customer-owned vehicles for work-related activities and must possess a valid driver’s license and automobile liability insurance.

The ideal candidate should have demonstrated experience in developing, understanding, troubleshooting, and qualifying large-scale aerospace friction stir welding processes. Familiarity with Gas Tungsten Arc Welding and/or Variable Polarity Plasma Arc welding techniques on aerospace materials such as aluminum (preferably alloys 2219 and 2195), stainless steel, superalloys, and/or titanium is also desirable. The candidate must be adept at working hands-on with equipment involving electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical components.

Prior experience with the following specifications and standards is required:

  • ANSI/AWS D17.1/D17.1M:2017-AMD2, 'Specification for Fusion Welding for Aerospace Applications.'
  • ANSI/AWS D17.3/D17.3M:2021, 'Specification for Friction Stir Welding of Aluminum Alloys for Aerospace Applications.'

Experience with the following specifications and standards is preferred but not mandatory:

  • NASA-STD-6016, 'Standard Materials and Processes Requirements for Spacecraft.'
  • NASA-STD-5006, 'General Fusion Welding Requirements for Aerospace Materials Used in Flight Hardware.'
  • MSFC-SPEC-3679, 'Process Specification – Welding Aerospace Hardware.'

Work Environment:
