Position Overview:

This role is integral to the Space Exploration Group (SEG) supporting the NASA EM32 Welding & Manufacturing (W&M) team under the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) contract.

Key Responsibilities:

The primary focus of this role is the fabrication of large aluminum aerospace structures utilizing both friction stir welding and fusion welding techniques. Responsibilities include:

  1. Developing welding methodologies, procedures, and the application of welding equipment to address fabrication challenges, leveraging knowledge of production specifications, material properties, and engineering principles.
  2. Conducting research and development to innovate and test new welding processes and procedures, enhance existing equipment, and explore new welding techniques.
  3. Preparing technical documentation resulting from research and development activities.
  4. Establishing welding protocols to guide production and welding teams regarding specification constraints and material processes.
  5. Evaluating advancements in the welding field for potential application to current production challenges.
  6. Leading and coordinating technical teams to ensure compliance with established welding standards and procedures.
  7. Exchanging insights and providing technical guidance on welding-related matters.
  8. Performing experimental welding to assess new equipment and techniques.
  9. Serving as the project lead engineer for specific customer welding development and manufacturing projects.
  10. Assisting other EM32 W&M Team clients in resolving issues related to their welding manufacturing processes.

The selected candidate will facilitate engineering and scientific problem-solving through mentorship and guidance, ensuring that work meets established requirements and deadlines. The candidate will demonstrate problem-solving abilities, project organization skills, and innovative approaches to develop standards for diverse activities.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering or a related discipline from an ABET-accredited institution is required. Typically, this role requires a minimum of a Master’s degree with at least 8 years of experience, or a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 10 years of experience.

The selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain permission to operate customer-owned vehicles and possess a valid driver's license and automobile liability insurance.

Relevant work experience will be assessed against ESSCA contract engineering labor categories.

The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain necessary customer safety certifications, including Welding Safety.

Demonstrated experience in developing and qualifying large-scale aerospace friction stir welding processes is essential. Experience with Gas Tungsten Arc Welding and/or Variable Polarity Plasma Arc welding on aerospace materials is preferred. The candidate should be capable of hands-on work with machine tool-like equipment involving electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.

Familiarity with the following specifications and standards is required:

  • ANSI/AWS D17.1/D17.1M:2017-AMD2, "Specification for Fusion Welding for Aerospace Applications."
  • ANSI/AWS D17.3/D17.3M:2021, "Specification for Friction Stir Welding of Aluminum Alloys for Aerospace Applications."

Experience with the following specifications and standards is desired but not mandatory:

  • NASA-STD-6016, "Standard Materials and Processes Requirements for Spacecraft."
  • NASA-STD-5006, "General Fusion Welding Requirements for Aerospace Materials Used in Flight Hardware."
  • MSFC-SPEC-3679, "Process Specification – Welding Aerospace Hardware."

Work Environment:

This position involves a mix of general office work (40%) and hands-on work in an industrial welding/manufacturing development laboratory (60%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires the ability to sit for extended periods during meetings and report writing, as well as standing and walking in a lab environment with safety requirements.

Attendance:

Regular attendance is essential, with a standard workday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Minimal overtime may be necessary to meet project milestones.

Other Essential Functions:

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound judgment is crucial.

Citizenship Requirement:

Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
