Position Overview:
This role is situated within the Space Exploration Group (JSEG), supporting the NASA EM32 Welding & Manufacturing (W&M) team under the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) contract.
Key Responsibilities:
The primary objective of this position is to manufacture large aluminum aerospace structures utilizing both friction stir welding and fusion welding techniques. The responsibilities include:
Developing welding techniques and procedures, applying knowledge of production specifications, metal properties, and engineering principles to solve fabrication challenges.
Conducting research and development to innovate and test new welding processes, enhance existing equipment, and refine welding methods.
Preparing comprehensive technical reports based on research findings.
Establishing welding procedures to guide production personnel, ensuring compliance with material processes and pre- and post-weld heating requirements.
Performing experimental welding to assess new equipment, techniques, and materials.
Leading specific customer welding development and manufacturing projects as the project lead engineer.
Assisting other EM32 W&M Team customers in troubleshooting and resolving welding manufacturing issues.
Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited institution is required. Candidates must possess the ability to operate customer-owned vehicles and maintain a valid driver's license along with automobile liability insurance.
Experience in developing and qualifying large-scale aerospace friction stir welding processes is essential. Familiarity with Gas Tungsten Arc Welding on aerospace materials, particularly aluminum alloys, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium, is highly desirable.
Knowledge of the following specifications and standards is required:
- ANSI/AWS D17.1/D17.1M:2017-AMD2, 'Specification for Fusion Welding for Aerospace Applications'
- ANSI/AWS D173/D173M:2021, 'Specification for Friction Stir Welding of Aluminum Alloys for Aerospace Applications'
Experience with additional specifications such as NASA-STD-6016 and NASA-STD-5006 is preferred but not mandatory.
