Position Overview:
This role is part of the Space Exploration Group (SEG) supporting the NASA EM32 Welding & Manufacturing (W&M) team under the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) contract.
Key Responsibilities:
The primary focus of this role is the fabrication of large aluminum aerospace structures utilizing both friction stir welding and fusion welding techniques. Responsibilities include:
- Developing welding methodologies, procedures, and the application of welding equipment to address fabrication challenges, leveraging knowledge of production specifications, metal properties, and engineering principles.
- Conducting research and development to innovate and test new welding processes and procedures, enhance existing welding equipment, and explore new welding techniques.
- Preparing technical documentation resulting from research and development activities.
- Establishing welding protocols to guide production personnel, addressing specification constraints, material processes, and pre- and post-weld heating requirements.
- Evaluating advancements in the welding field for potential application to current production challenges.
- Leading and coordinating technical teams to ensure compliance with established welding standards and procedures.
- Providing technical advice and exchanging information regarding welding issues.
- Conducting experimental welding to assess new equipment, techniques, and materials.
- Serving as the project lead engineer for specific customer welding development and manufacturing projects.
- Assisting other EM32 W&M Team clients in understanding and resolving welding manufacturing challenges.
The selected candidate will support engineering and scientific problem-solving and task completion through guidance and mentorship. They will monitor work to ensure compliance with requirements and deadlines, possessing the ability to address issues, define project objectives, organize tasks, and develop innovative solutions. The candidate will plan and execute engineering projects that tackle unique or complex problems impacting major organizational programs.
Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering or a related discipline from an ABET-accredited institution is required. Typically, this position requires a Master's degree with a minimum of 8 years of experience, or a Bachelor's degree with at least 10 years of experience.
The selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain the necessary permissions to operate customer-owned vehicles. A valid driver's license and automobile liability insurance are required, along with successful completion of a company defensive driving training course.
Relevant work experience will be assessed against ESSCA contract engineering labor categories.
The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain the following safety certifications:
- Welding Safety Certification.
Demonstrated experience in developing, troubleshooting, and qualifying large-scale aerospace friction stir welding processes is essential. Experience with Gas Tungsten Arc Welding and/or Variable Polarity Plasma Arc welding on aerospace materials such as aluminum (preferably alloys 2219 and 2195), stainless steel, superalloys, and/or titanium using both manual and mechanized techniques is also desirable. The candidate should be capable of working hands-on with machine tool-like equipment involving electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.
Prior experience with the following specifications and standards is required:
- ANSI/AWS D17.1/D17.1M:2017-AMD2, 'Specification for Fusion Welding for Aerospace Applications.'
- ANSI/AWS D17.3/D17.3M:2021, 'Specification for Friction Stir Welding of Aluminum Alloys for Aerospace Applications.'
Experience with the following specifications and standards is preferred but not mandatory:
- NASA-STD-6016, 'Standard Materials and Processes Requirements for Spacecraft.'
- NASA-STD-5006, 'General Fusion Welding Requirements for Aerospace Materials Used in Flight Hardware.'
- MSFC-SPEC-3679, 'Process Specification – Welding Aerospace Hardware.'
Work Environment:
This role involves a mix of general office work (40%) and industrial welding/manufacturing development laboratory/machine shop (60%). Effective interaction with colleagues, management, and clients is essential. Clear and concise communication, both verbal and written, is required (50%). Some travel may be necessary, but infrequent (
