Position Overview:
This role is integral to the Space Exploration Group (JSEG) supporting advanced welding and manufacturing initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
The main focus of this role is the fabrication of large aluminum aerospace structures utilizing both friction stir welding and fusion welding techniques. Responsibilities include:
1. Developing welding methodologies, procedures, and the application of welding technologies to address fabrication challenges, leveraging knowledge of production specifications, metal properties, and engineering principles.
2. Conducting research and development to innovate and assess new welding processes and technologies, enhance existing methods, and explore new welding phenomena.
3. Compiling technical documentation resulting from research and development activities.
4. Establishing welding protocols to guide production teams on material processes and welding specifications, particularly involving complex alloys and critical joints.
5. Evaluating advancements in the welding sector for potential application to current production challenges.
6. Leading and coordinating inspections to ensure compliance with established welding standards and procedures.
7. Sharing insights and providing technical guidance on welding-related issues.
8. Performing experimental welding to assess new technologies and materials.
9. Acting as the project lead engineer for specific welding development and manufacturing projects.
10. Assisting clients in understanding and resolving challenges related to their welding processes.
The selected candidate will serve as a welding expert, collaborating closely with engineers and technicians to address complex design and manufacturing challenges.
Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering or a related discipline from an accredited institution is required. Typically, this role requires a Master's degree with a minimum of 23 years of experience, or a Bachelor's degree with at least 25 years of experience. The candidate must be eligible to operate customer-owned vehicles and maintain a valid driver's license.
Experience in large-scale aerospace friction stir welding processes is essential, along with familiarity with Gas Tungsten Arc Welding and/or Variable Polarity Plasma Arc welding techniques on aerospace materials. Previous experience with relevant specifications and standards is required.
Work Environment:
This position involves a mix of office and industrial environments, requiring effective interaction with colleagues and clients. Some travel may be necessary, but it will be infrequent.
Physical Requirements:
The role requires the ability to sit for extended periods during meetings and while performing engineering tasks, as well as standing and walking in a lab environment. Safety gear will be necessary in certain operational contexts.
Attendance:
Regular attendance is essential, with minimal overtime expected to meet project deadlines.
Other Essential Functions:
The ability to work independently and make sound decisions is crucial. Professional grooming and attire must align with safety standards.
