Position Overview:
This role is part of the Space Exploration Group (JSEG) supporting the NASA EM32 Welding & Manufacturing (W&M) team under the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) contract.
Key Responsibilities:
The primary focus of this role is the fabrication of large aluminum aerospace structures utilizing both friction stir welding and fusion welding techniques. The candidate's education and experience will be assessed in this context. The main responsibilities include:
1. Developing welding techniques, procedures, and the application of welding equipment to address fabrication challenges involving metals, leveraging knowledge of production specifications, properties of metals and alloys, and engineering principles.
2. Conducting research and development initiatives to create and evaluate new welding processes and procedures, enhance existing or develop new welding equipment, modify current welding methods, and explore new welding phenomena.
3. Compiling technical reports based on research and development findings.
4. Establishing welding procedures to guide production and welding personnel regarding specification restrictions, material processes, and pre- and post-weld heating requirements, particularly involving complex alloys and critical joints.
5. Assessing new advancements in the welding field for potential application to current production challenges.
6. Leading and coordinating technical personnel in inspections to ensure compliance with established welding procedures and standards.
7. Sharing ideas, information, and providing technical advice on welding matters.
8. Performing experimental welding to assess new equipment, techniques, and materials.
9. Acting as project lead engineer to manage specific customer welding development and manufacturing projects.
10. Assisting other EM32 W&M Team customers in understanding and resolving issues related to their welding manufacturing processes.
The selected candidate will serve as a welding expert for various projects and collaborate closely with JSEG and customer engineers and technicians. The candidate will provide professional consultation, technical expertise, and specialized skills as necessary to address complex challenges related to design, development, analysis, integration, evaluation, testing, and verification of welding processes.
Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited institution is required. Typically, educational requirements equate to a minimum of a Master's degree with at least 23 years of experience, or a Bachelor's degree with at least 25 years of experience. The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain permission to operate customer-owned vehicles for work activities and possess a valid driver's license with automobile liability insurance.
The candidate must have proven experience in developing, understanding, troubleshooting, and qualifying large-scale aerospace friction stir welding processes. Experience with Gas Tungsten Arc Welding and/or Variable Polarity Plasma Arc welding on aerospace materials such as aluminum (preferably alloys 2219 and 2195), stainless steel, superalloys, and/or titanium using both manual and mechanized techniques is also desired. The candidate should be capable of hands-on work with machine tool-like equipment involving electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical components.
Prior experience with the following specifications and standards is required:
1. ANSI/AWS D17.1/D17.1M:2017-AMD2, "Specification for Fusion Welding for Aerospace Applications." 2. ANSI/AWS D17.3/D17.3M:2021, "Specification for Friction Stir Welding of Aluminum Alloys for Aerospace Applications."
Experience with the following specifications and standards is preferred but not mandatory:
1. NASA-STD-6016, "Standard Materials and Processes Requirements for Spacecraft." 2. NASA-STD-5006, "General Fusion Welding Requirements for Aerospace Materials Used in Flight Hardware." 3. MSFC-SPEC-3679, "Process Specification – Welding Aerospace Hardware."
Work Environment:
This position involves a general office environment (40%) and an industrial welding/manufacturing development laboratory/machine shop (60%). It requires effective interaction with colleagues, management, and clients, along with clear and concise communication skills, both verbal and written (50%). Some travel may be necessary, but it will be infrequent (
