As a School-Based Mental Health Specialist, your primary role will be to assist students in achieving success academically, socially, and emotionally. This will be accomplished through individual and group counseling, as well as collaboration with educators, parents, and other professionals to foster a safe, healthy, and supportive educational atmosphere that enhances connections between home and school.

‖ Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Facilitating individual and group counseling sessions to address interpersonal or family issues that may hinder academic performance, including crisis intervention as necessary.
  • Conducting assessments through interviews with students, family members, and school staff to gather essential information regarding students' social, emotional, and behavioral adjustments.
  • Maintaining consistent communication with students' guardians to update them on progress, challenges, and any home life changes that could impact school performance.
  • Creating and revising Individualized Education Plans (IEP) and Positive Behavior Intervention Plans (PBIP) in compliance with relevant regulations and procedures.
  • Participating in IEP team meetings and contributing to discussions on specific student and parent concerns.
  • Collaborating with educational and social service professionals to develop suitable agency services for students and their families.
  • Managing case functions for students, including organizing parent meetings, emergency transportation requests, and disciplinary actions.
  • Working alongside teachers, parents, and district personnel to devise effective solutions for learning and behavioral challenges while promoting a positive organizational image.
  • Ensuring the application of positive teaching methods by conducting monthly observations of classroom staff's implementation of IEP goals and PBIPs.
  • Providing guidance and support to educators in developing classroom schedules and maintaining student data systems to ensure alignment with each student's IEP and related goals.
  • Evaluating student progress through regular review of classroom data and offering training to staff to address student needs.
  • Acting as a role model for effective teaching and communication, reinforcing the organization's commitment to data-driven decision-making and positive reinforcement.

‖ Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in educational counseling, therapy, or a closely related field.
  • Compliance with state and district requirements for appropriate school counselor licensing and/or credentials.
  • Accepted licenses and/or credentials include:
    • Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist - LMFT
    • Educational Psychologist
    • Licensed Clinical Social Worker - LCSW
    • Licensed Master Social Worker - LMSW
  • Special education certification is preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience working with students with emotional disorders and challenging behaviors in an educational setting.
  • Experience and knowledge in applied behavior analysis is preferred.
  • Experience working with students in special education settings is preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication, instructional, conflict resolution, multitasking, problem-solving, decision-making, and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with relevant technology, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and database management.
