About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Structural Engineer to join our team at HII's Newport News Shipbuilding division. As a key member of our Shock Engineering and Advanced Analysis team, you will be responsible for performing dynamic structural analyses and developing engineering calculation reports.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform dynamic structural analyses using finite element analysis (FEA) methods and computer applications such as FEMAP, NASTRAN, Abaqus, and Hypermesh.
  • Develop engineering calculation reports and check structural analyses reports.
  • Lead various projects of growing scope and provide technical oversight and training to junior engineers.
  • Analyze damage tolerance, durability, design allowables, and structural modeling.
  • Develop structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic, or composite structural materials for product design or operation.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • 5 years of relevant exempt experience or Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience or Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.
  • Detailed knowledge of structural response and design requirements for surface ships or submarines.
  • Detailed knowledge and experience with Finite Element Analysis software (Femap, Hypermesh, or Abaqus) and related first-principles methods.
  • Ability to learn new programs and old, i.e., FORTRAN, Matlab, Python, etc.
  • Ability to move forward on projects when the path isn't clear through consultation with senior engineers.
  • Experience in project management with an ability to plan and execute tasks to meet program objectives.
  • Ability to communicate with internal and external customers in a professional manner.
  • Skilled at technical writing and reporting.
  • Experience with high-performance computing systems and nonlinear advanced analysis methods.
