GASB Graduate Technical Support Associate

Position Summary: The GASB Graduate Technical Support Associate plays a crucial role in delivering technical and administrative assistance across various GASB initiatives. This support is designed to bolster the efficiency of the standards-setting process and generally involves conducting foundational research, analyzing and summarizing diverse technical data, communicating the findings of staff research and analysis, and aiding in the formulation of alternative solutions and staff recommendations on technical matters, as well as integrating the Board's decisions into drafts of GASB publications.
Key Responsibilities:
A. Project Management and Execution
- Fulfill assigned tasks, activities, and projects within designated timelines. Promptly inform your supervisor of any potential delays.
- Adhere to project management guidelines and procedures as outlined in the RTA Manual and GASB Rules of Procedure, ensuring due process and collaboration with FAF support functions.
B. Technical Research and Analysis
- Under the guidance of the project manager, engage in research activities that include (a) surveying current practices, (b) analyzing feedback from comment letters, (c) investigating existing governmental accounting standards alongside relevant FASB, IPSASB, and FASAB literature, and (d) collecting and summarizing insights from GASAC members, task force, and advisory committee members, as well as other stakeholders.
- Prepare analytical reports based on research to be utilized in materials for educational sessions and/or Board meetings.
C. Communication
- Contribute to discussions during Board meetings and educational sessions.
- Draft clear and concise Board materials in accordance with the RTA Manual and the GASB Style Manual.
- Develop or revise research and project communications following the communication guidelines outlined in the RTA Manual.
D. Additional Responsibilities
- Acquire a comprehensive understanding of governmental accounting and develop technical expertise in areas relevant to assigned tasks.
- Additional duties may include interviewing candidates for the postgraduate technical assistant role and assisting with non-technical tasks, including research and project administration.

- Technical Knowledge and Analytical Skills:
- Must be nominated by a member of their school's accounting department and should be a recent graduate or nearing graduation from a master's program in accounting or a double major. Candidates should have:
- An exemplary academic record.
- Completed coursework that provides a solid foundation in accounting theory and practice.
- A strong interest in the theoretical dimensions of accounting.
- Critical thinking abilities and creativity.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with a particular emphasis on superior writing ability.
- Proficiency with personal computers, particularly Microsoft Office, and familiarity with various software and hardware.
- Personal Attributes:
- Ability to thrive in a team-oriented environment.
- Strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize multiple assignments.
- Maturity, motivation, and leadership qualities.
- A career interest in financial reporting or governmental accounting is preferred.
A graduate or undergraduate degree in accounting or public administration is preferred, though not mandatory.
