Job Overview

The Financial Accounting Foundation offers a postgraduate technical research assistant program aimed at individuals aspiring to build a career in accounting. This program spans one year, during which participants engage deeply with the accounting standards-setting process, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the roles of preparers, auditors, and users of financial information.

Key Responsibilities:

A. Technical Research and Analysis

  1. Postgraduate Technical Research Assistants will be assigned to significant agenda projects, addressing short-term practice and implementation challenges, as well as post-implementation review issues, based on the organization's staffing needs. They will actively participate in all phases of their designated projects, which include analyzing written feedback on documents issued for public commentary, reviewing and interpreting published research, preparing memoranda on technical matters for Board members, drafting due process documents, and assessing accounting proposals from other entities. Furthermore, they will attend and engage in public Board meetings, nonpublic small group discussions with Board members, advisory group sessions, roundtables, and other outreach events relevant to their projects.
  2. Postgraduate Technical Research Assistants will be responsible for maintaining and updating project team online libraries in SharePoint, ensuring proper metadata assignment and cataloging for firm-wide searchability and accessibility. They will also log interactions with stakeholders by topical area to facilitate analysis for current and future project teams.

B. Planning and Execution of Work

  1. Complete assigned tasks, activities, and projects within the designated timeframes, promptly notifying direct project supervisors of any delays.
  2. Adhere to project management policies and procedures as outlined in the RTA Reference manual and Rules of Procedure, including interactions with FAF support functions.

C. Communication

  1. Engage in discussions during small group meetings and Board meetings.
  2. Assist in drafting materials for Board presentations.
  3. Update project communications in line with the project communication guidelines specified in the Reference Manual.
  4. Conduct basic research in response to technical inquiries from external stakeholders.
  5. Present information about the Postgraduate Technical Assistant Program to undergraduate and graduate accounting classes.

D. Additional Responsibilities

  1. Other tasks may include providing feedback on new Postgraduate Technical Assistant candidates and assisting Human Resources with coordinating interview schedules.
  2. Additional duties may involve supporting the Planning and Control Manager with various administrative or non-project-related tasks.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  1. Project Management: Ability to meet reasonable deadlines.

  1. Technical Knowledge and Analytical Skills:

Candidates must be nominated by a member of their school's accounting department and should be recent graduates or soon-to-be graduates from a master's program in accounting or a double major. Candidates should possess:

  • An exceptional academic record.
  • Completed coursework that provides a solid understanding of accounting theory and practice.
  • A strong interest in the theoretical aspects of accounting.
  • Critical thinking abilities and creativity.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with a particular emphasis on superior writing ability.
  • Proficiency with personal computers, specifically Microsoft Office and various software and hardware applications.
  1. Personal Attributes:

Ability to thrive in a team-oriented environment, demonstrating strong time management skills and the capacity to prioritize multiple assignments. Candidates should exhibit maturity, motivation, and leadership qualities, with a career interest in Financial Reporting preferred.

  1. Relevant Experience:

Prior exposure to internships in accounting, assurance, or auditing is preferred.
