Summary:
The Healthcare Support Specialist plays a vital role in assisting with patient care tasks and various unit responsibilities under the guidance of licensed healthcare professionals and as directed by management.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Deliver physical care to assigned patients and execute technical skills such as point of care (POC) testing.
2. Promptly and accurately implement nursing directives, understanding the intent behind each.
3. Adhere to policies and procedures for designated patient care tasks, including the use of unit-specific equipment.
4. Enhance patient comfort by assisting with positioning, bathing, organizing linens, and ensuring personal items are within reach, demonstrating courtesy and responsiveness.
5. Ensure patient safety through preventative measures, including side rails, restraints, bed/chair exit alarms, and regular rounding.
6. Accurately input all relevant data into the electronic health record system.
7. Communicate all pertinent patient and visitor information and observations to the appropriate personnel.
8. Provide age-appropriate care, demonstrating knowledge of growth and development principles across the lifespan.
9. Report and document any changes in patient condition or behavior, and notify the nurse in charge of any unusual occurrences.
10. Recognize and prioritize tasks within the patient care process, responding promptly and exercising sound judgment.
11. Foster effective working relationships with all healthcare team members, patients, and their families.
12. Maintain a safe and organized work environment, ensuring a clean and well-stocked workspace, and assist with unit equipment upkeep.
13. Serve as a Safety Attendant/Patient Sitter, ensuring a secure environment for specific patients, in accordance with organizational standards of service excellence.
14. Participate in staff meetings and review/sign all meeting minutes.
15. Maintain competency in Basic Life Support certification.
16. Fulfill all compliance responsibilities associated with the role.
17. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Education Requirements:
A minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent is required, along with zero to six months of relevant experience.
Additional Information:
Experience in a healthcare setting is preferred but not mandatory. Active CNA certification is preferred. BLS/CPR certification is required within 90 days of hire or upon completion of the orientation process, whichever occurs first.
Working Conditions:
Manual: Significant manual skills and motor coordination required.
Occupational: Some occupational risks present.
Physical Effort: Very heavy physical effort; may require exerting up to 50 lbs. of force.
