Position Overview:

We are seeking a talented and versatile Lead Technical Artist (Environment) who possesses a deep enthusiasm for game development, exceptional problem-solving skills, and a commitment to enhancing processes and workflows. This role serves as a vital link between artistic vision and technological execution, representing a dedicated team of technical artists while collaborating closely with programmers, designers, and other artists to establish and maintain effective world-building and content pipelines, ensuring the seamless transition of assets from initial creation to final implementation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide hands-on leadership, including task definition, prioritization, and delegation.
  • Mentor and guide technical artists of varying experience levels within the team.
  • Conduct evaluations and offer constructive feedback to facilitate professional growth among team members.
  • Work in partnership with Engineering, Design, and Art teams to devise practical and efficient solutions for high-quality game level creation.
  • Act as the primary stakeholder for the discipline, contributing individually as needed to prototype, implement, and adopt new features that align with both technical specifications and artistic goals.
  • Assist in level creation within the engine and direct the team in developing tools and automation to enhance production efficiency.
  • Diagnose content authoring challenges faced by artists and implement safeguards in the pipeline to reduce future issues.
  • Investigate, assess, and integrate new engine features into the production workflow as they become available.
  • Ensure the production of clear, maintainable code that adheres to established coding standards within the studio's code library.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive tools and workflow documentation.
  • Facilitate effective communication with production, providing timely updates on task progress and any unforeseen issues that may affect scheduling.
  • Identify performance issues and bottlenecks in the game and assist in optimizing art content.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Required: A minimum of 6 years of professional experience in game development as an environment technical artist or pipeline technical director.
  • Required: Expertise in Unreal Engine, both as a power user and developer (Blueprint & C++), particularly in world-building and level design.
  • Required: Proficient in Python, particularly in tools and UI development (e.g., PyQt).
  • Required: Experience in runtime profiling and optimization, with a solid understanding of best practices for resource efficiency.
  • Required: In-depth knowledge of asset creation workflows across various digital content creation tools (Maya, Blender, Substance, Houdini, ZBrush, etc.).
  • Preferred: Experience shipping at least one title using Unreal Engine.
  • Preferred: Previous leadership or management experience.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with photogrammetry and scanned assets.
  • Bonus: Experience in shader programming.

Compensation for this role will be determined based on various factors, including industry standards, experience, and specific skills relevant to the position. This role may also be eligible for additional incentive compensation, including equity and profit sharing.
