Position Overview: We are seeking a proficient and versatile Lead Technical Artist (Environment) who possesses a passion for game development, exceptional problem-solving skills, and a keen interest in optimizing processes and workflows. This role is essential in bridging the gap between technology and artistry, representing a dedicated team of technical artists while collaborating closely with programmers, designers, and artists to enhance world-building and content pipelines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide hands-on leadership, including task scoping, prioritization, and delegation.
  • Mentor and guide technical artists of varying experience levels.
  • Conduct reviews and offer constructive feedback to foster professional growth.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Design, and Art teams to devise practical solutions for creating high-fidelity game levels.
  • Act as a stakeholder and liaison for the discipline, contributing to the prototyping and implementation of new features that align with technical requirements and artistic vision.
  • Support level creation within the engine and direct the team in developing tools and automation to enhance production efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot content authoring challenges faced by artists and establish safeguards in the pipeline to reduce future errors.
  • Research and integrate new engine features into the production workflow as they become available.
  • Ensure the team produces clear, maintainable code adhering to studio coding standards.
  • Create and maintain documentation for tools and workflows.
  • Maintain effective communication with production, providing timely updates on task status and any unforeseen issues that may affect scheduling.
  • Identify performance issues and bottlenecks in the game, assisting with art content optimization.

Qualifications:

  • Required: 6+ years of professional experience in game development as an environment technical artist or pipeline technical director.
  • Required: Expertise in Unreal Engine, both as a power user and developer (Blueprint & C++), particularly in world-building and level creation.
  • Required: Strong proficiency in Python, especially in tools and UI development (e.g., PyQt).
  • Required: Experience in runtime profiling and optimization, with a solid understanding of resource efficiency best practices.
  • Required: In-depth knowledge of asset creation workflows across various DCC tools (Maya, Blender, Substance, Houdini, ZBrush, etc.).
  • Preferred: Familiarity with procedural content generation workflows.
  • Preferred: Experience shipping at least one title using Unreal Engine.
  • Preferred: Previous leadership or management experience.
  • Preferred: Experience with photogrammetry and scanned assets.
  • Bonus: Skills in shader writing.
  • Bonus: Experience with Maya API or plugin development.

Compensation and Benefits: That's No Moon offers a competitive compensation package, including base pay, equity, and profit-sharing opportunities. Our estimated base pay range for this role is $158,000 - $213,000. We also provide comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, 401(k) matching, flexible PTO, and more, with eligibility varying based on employment status.
