Position Summary

The Art Therapist will play a crucial role in delivering art therapy sessions tailored for older adults within a senior center environment. This position is part of a two-year pilot initiative aimed at providing specialized mental health services for older adults.

The Art Therapist will utilize psychotherapeutic techniques within a group art therapy framework to assist clients in enhancing their emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being. A solid foundation in visual arts, along with exceptional communication and group therapy skills, is essential for success in this role.

Qualifications
  • Master's degree in art therapy or counseling, with supplementary coursework in art therapy.
  • Certification from the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB).
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience as an art therapist.
  • In-depth knowledge of visual arts and art therapy methodologies.
  • Strong clinical skills, particularly in individual and group therapy settings.
  • Ability to design and implement art therapy interventions specifically for older adults.
  • Proven group facilitation experience.
  • Prior clinical experience working with older adults in relevant settings is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Strong observational and counseling skills.
  • Analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Cultural sensitivity and the ability to engage with a multi-cultural client base.
  • Capacity to maintain professional boundaries while fostering positive outcomes.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check is mandatory prior to employment.
Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to enroll clients in art therapy groups.
  • Conduct pre- and post-assessments to evaluate client progress related to depression and anxiety.
  • Facilitate group art therapy sessions utilizing various artistic mediums, including drawing, painting, and sculpting.
  • Engage clients in discussions about their artwork to explore emotions and meanings.
  • Develop customized art therapy programs based on client needs and artistic preferences.
  • Teach coping strategies to help clients navigate challenging experiences.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of client progress and observations during sessions.
  • Create a supportive environment that encourages self-expression and personal development.
  • Participate in consultation meetings and maintain communication with relevant program directors and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to quality improvement and effective processes.
