Position Overview:

We are in search of a proficient and versatile Lead Technical Artist (Environment) who possesses a deep enthusiasm for game development, a strong aptitude for troubleshooting, and a keen interest in enhancing processes and workflows. This position serves as a vital link between artistic vision and technological execution, representing a dedicated team of technical artists while collaborating closely with programmers, designers, and artists. The goal is to establish and maintain effective world-building and content pipelines, ensuring seamless asset and level delivery from initial concept to final implementation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide hands-on leadership, including task scoping, prioritization, and delegation.
  • Mentor and guide technical artists at various experience levels within the team.
  • Conduct performance reviews and offer constructive feedback to foster professional growth.
  • Work in partnership with Engineering, Design, and Art teams to devise practical and efficient solutions for creating high-quality game environments.
  • Act as the primary stakeholder for the discipline, contributing to the prototyping and implementation of new features that align with both technical specifications and artistic goals.
  • Assist in level creation within the engine, while directing the team to develop tools and automation that enhance production efficiency.
  • Identify and resolve content authoring challenges faced by artists, implementing safeguards to prevent future issues.
  • Research and integrate new engine features into the production workflow as they become available.
  • Ensure the team adheres to coding standards and produces clear, maintainable code within the studio's code library.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for tools and workflows.
  • Communicate effectively with production teams, providing timely updates on task progress and any unforeseen issues that may affect scheduling.
  • Identify and address performance bottlenecks in the game, assisting with the optimization of art content.

Qualifications:

  • Required: Minimum of 6 years of professional experience in game development as an environment technical artist or pipeline technical director.
  • Required: Expertise in Unreal Engine, both as a power user and developer (Blueprint & C++), particularly in world-building and level design.
  • Required: Strong proficiency in Python, especially in the development of tools and user interfaces (e.g., PyQt).
  • Required: Experience in runtime profiling and optimization, with a solid understanding of resource efficiency best practices.
  • Required: Comprehensive knowledge of asset creation workflows across various digital content creation tools (Maya, Blender, Substance, Houdini, ZBrush, etc.).
  • Preferred: Experience shipping at least one title using Unreal Engine.
  • Preferred: Previous leadership or management experience within a team setting.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with photogrammetry and the use of scanned assets.
  • Bonus: Experience in shader programming.

Compensation for this role is determined based on various factors, including industry standards, location, experience, and specific job-related skills. In addition to base salary, this position may offer additional incentive compensation, such as equity and profit sharing.
