Position Summary:

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will be responsible for managing operations, financial oversight, human resources, information technology, and regulatory compliance. Reporting directly to the CEO and serving as a key member of the senior leadership team, the COO will play a pivotal role in developing, executing, and supervising JFNA's operational processes, workflows, and protocols. This role is essential for managing daily operations, allowing the CEO to concentrate on strategic initiatives.

The COO will collaborate closely with the CEO and other executives (including the Chief Marketing Officer, Chief Impact Officer, Chief Philanthropy Officer, and Managing Director of Jewish Education) to formulate, implement, and oversee the operational components of the annual budget. The COO will establish structure, enhance efficiency, and ensure accountability across all departments.

Key Responsibilities:

Operational Management

  1. Design, develop, and execute operational policies that align with the organization's goals.
  2. Establish and maintain a consensus-driven structure for the effective delivery of administrative operations (Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology).
  3. Analyze operational data to identify improvement opportunities and implement solutions.
  4. Oversee the preparation and submission of the annual operating budget, managing effectively within this framework and providing accurate progress reports.
  5. Manage relationships with external vendors for Accounting, HR, and IT services, including contract negotiations and legal reviews.
  6. Oversee the annual compensation administration process, conducting market research to ensure equitable salary structures.
  7. Serve as the primary liaison to the Finance Committee, alongside the Director of Finance, interpreting financial results and implications.
  8. Ensure fiscal accountability through the development and management of operating budgets.
  9. Summarize key financial issues for the CEO, facilitating informed discussions.
  10. Collaborate with external auditors and accounting firms to address their recommendations.
  11. Coordinate processes with relevant community foundations regarding organizational funds.

Leadership and Team Development

  1. Lead and mentor the operations team, providing vision and fostering a positive organizational culture.
  2. Work in tandem with the CEO to implement the organizational vision, strategy, and operational plans.
  3. Build collaborative relationships across departments, including philanthropy, education, marketing, and impact.
  4. Provide comprehensive oversight for all operational functions to achieve organizational objectives.
  5. Anticipate and plan for necessary changes in policies and practices to align with strategic goals.
  6. Facilitate effective communication and information flow within teams and across the organization.
  7. Optimize systems and processes for improved efficiency and financial stability.
  8. Regularly evaluate departmental performance and engage in discussions with the CEO regarding outcomes and challenges.
  9. Manage team performance through clear goal-setting and timely feedback.

Qualifications:

  1. A minimum of ten years of progressive experience in relevant roles.
  2. At least five years of experience in leadership positions with indirect reports.
  3. Experience in the non-profit sector is preferred.
