The City of Sunnyvale is seeking a qualified individual for the role of Accounting Technician within the Finance Department. This position is currently available in the Utility Billing, Business License, and Cashiering division.

The established eligibility list will be utilized for current and future vacancies in the Utility Billing, Business License, and Cashiering division.


Under the general oversight of a designated supervisor, the Accounting Technician will deliver technical accounting assistance in various areas such as accounts receivable, accounts payable, cashiering, auditing, revenue collections, or similar functions. Responsibilities include managing daily operations of the assigned area, which involves inputting and analyzing financial data, processing checks, addressing exceptions, and responding to inquiries; along with performing related tasks as necessary.


DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Accounting Technician position represents a fully qualified journey-level classification within the Accounting Technician series. This series is characterized by its emphasis on tasks that necessitate a solid understanding of fundamental accounting procedures and practices.

Unlike the Senior Accounting Technician, who handles more intricate accounting responsibilities, the Accounting Technician focuses on essential accounting functions.

Essential Job Functions

Engages in a variety of technical accounting tasks related to the preparation, maintenance, and processing of financial records and transactions.

Processes, categorizes, inputs, and retrieves financial information using computerized accounting systems.


Verifies accounting entries and maintains reconciled financial records associated with assigned functions such as accounts receivable, accounts payable, cashiering, auditing, or revenue collections.


Addresses inquiries from other departments and the public; investigates discrepancies and follows up on outstanding issues pertinent to assigned responsibilities.

Collaborates with staff to resolve disputes.

Interprets relevant rules, regulations, policies, ordinances, and laws as they relate to assigned job functions.

Performs cashiering duties, including processing checks, balancing cash drawers, and verifying daily cash receipts.

WORKING CONDITIONS


This position requires prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping during daily activities.

Additionally, it necessitates fine motor skills and coordination for computer keyboard use. Near and far vision is essential for reading reports and work-related documents. Acute hearing is required for effective phone and personal customer service. The ability to lift, drag, and push files, papers, and documents weighing up to 10 pounds is also necessary. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for qualified individuals who request such accommodations.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way:

Graduation from high school or tested equivalent AND


Two years of technical accounting support experience, with at least one year specific to one of the assigned functional areas, including automated financial systems.

Knowledge Of

Principles and practices of basic accounting and financial record keeping.

Functions of accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, cashiering, auditing, or revenue collections.

Basic understanding of contracts, regulations, and laws specific to job functions.

Office methods, procedures, software, and equipment.

Principles of customer service.

Ability To

Establish and maintain accurate records and files.

Understand and apply laws and procedures.

Utilize a computerized accounting system, including data input, data inquiry, and report generation.

Perform mathematical calculations using a calculator and operate a 10-Key pad by touch.

Operate a computer using word processing and business software along with other office equipment.

Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, public officials, and the public.

Demonstrate initiative and exercise good judgment in the performance of duties.

Work independently and as part of a team; recognize and set priorities and meet deadlines.

Observe safety principles and work in a safe manner.

Licenses/Certificates


Possession and continued maintenance of a valid class C California driver's license or the ability to provide alternative transportation as approved by the appointing authority and a safe driving record.

Desirable Qualifications

College coursework in finance, accounting, or a related field.

EXAM PROCESS
Applications will be competitively screened based on the minimum qualifications of this position.

Based upon a review of the application materials, the most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the oral examination process.


SELECTION PROCESS


Candidates who achieve a passing score on the examination will be placed on an eligibility list for up to one year, in accordance with the City's Civil Service Rules and Administrative Policies.

Top candidates on the eligibility list will be invited to participate in a selection interview with the department.


Any candidate selected by the hiring department will be required to successfully complete a pre-employment process, which may include a background history check, as well as a medical exam administered by a City-selected physician before hire.

Prior to starting work, all newly hired employees will be fingerprinted to check conviction history.

A conviction history will not necessarily disqualify an applicant from appointment; however, failure to disclose conviction history will result in refusal of employment or termination.

Positions covered by the Department of Transportation regulations are required to submit to a pre-employment drug test and to random drug and alcohol testing.

Any successful candidate selected by the hiring department will be required to submit proof of education (i.e., original copy of the diploma or college/university transcripts).
