The City of Sunnyvale is seeking a qualified individual for the role of Accounting Technician within the Finance Department. This position is situated in the Utility Billing, Business License, and Cashiering division.

The established eligibility list will serve for current and future vacancies in the Utility Billing, Business License, and Cashiering division.


Under the general supervision of a designated supervisor, the Accounting Technician will deliver technical accounting assistance in various areas, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, cashiering, auditing, and revenue collections. The role involves managing daily operations such as entering and processing financial data, handling checks, addressing exceptions, and responding to inquiries.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Execute a range of technical accounting tasks related to the preparation, maintenance, and processing of financial records and transactions.

2. Input, code, and retrieve financial data utilizing computerized accounting systems.


3. Verify accounting entries and maintain accurate financial records related to assigned functions, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, cashiering, auditing, and revenue collections.


4. Address inquiries from various departments and the public, investigate discrepancies, and follow up on outstanding issues.
5. Collaborate with staff to resolve disputes.


WORKING ENVIRONMENT


This position necessitates prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping as part of daily activities. The role also requires fine motor skills for computer usage, as well as near and far vision for reading reports and documents. Effective communication skills are essential for providing customer service.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
To qualify, candidates must have:

- A high school diploma or equivalent AND
- Two years of technical accounting support experience, with at least one year in a specific functional area, including automated financial systems.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

- Understanding of basic accounting principles and financial record-keeping practices.
- Familiarity with accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, cashiering, auditing, or revenue collections.
- Basic knowledge of relevant contracts, regulations, and laws.
- Proficiency in office methods, procedures, software, and equipment.
- Strong customer service principles.
