The City of Sunnyvale is seeking a qualified individual for the role of Accounting Technician within the Finance Department. This position is currently available in the Utility Billing, Business License, and Cashiering division.

The established eligibility list will serve for current and future vacancies in the Utility Billing, Business License, and Cashiering division.


Under the general supervision of a designated supervisor, the Accounting Technician will provide essential technical accounting assistance in various areas such as accounts receivable, accounts payable, cashiering, auditing, and revenue collections. Responsibilities include managing daily operations of the assigned area, which encompasses inputting and processing financial data, handling checks, addressing exceptions, and responding to inquiries.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

(Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to):

- Performing a range of technical accounting tasks related to the preparation, maintenance, and processing of financial records and transactions.
- Utilizing computerized accounting systems to process, code, enter, and retrieve financial data.

- Verifying accounting entries and maintaining accurate financial records pertinent to assigned functions such as accounts receivable, accounts payable, cashiering, auditing, and revenue collections.

- Addressing inquiries from other departments and the public, researching discrepancies, and following up on outstanding issues.

- Collaborating with staff to resolve disputes.
- Interpreting relevant rules, regulations, policies, ordinances, and laws related to job functions.
- Executing cashiering duties, including processing checks, balancing cash drawers, and verifying daily cash receipts.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT


This position involves prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping during daily activities. The role also requires fine motor skills for using a computer keyboard, as well as near and far vision for reading reports and documents. Acute hearing is necessary for providing customer service. Additionally, the ability to lift, drag, and push files and documents weighing up to 10 pounds is required. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for qualified individuals who request them.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
The minimum qualifications for this position can be met through:

- Graduation from high school or equivalent AND


- Two years of technical accounting support experience, with at least one year specific to one of the assigned functional areas, including automated financial systems.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

- Understanding of basic accounting principles and financial record-keeping practices.
- Familiarity with accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, cashiering, auditing, or revenue collections.
- Basic knowledge of contracts, regulations, and laws relevant to job functions.
- Proficiency in office methods, procedures, software, and equipment.
- Strong customer service principles.

ABILITIES

- Maintain accurate records and files.
- Understand and apply relevant laws and procedures.
- Utilize computerized accounting systems for data input, inquiry, and report generation.
- Perform mathematical calculations using a calculator and 10-Key pad.
- Operate a computer with word processing and business software.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Foster positive working relationships with colleagues, public officials, and the community.
- Demonstrate initiative and sound judgment in executing duties.
- Work independently and collaboratively, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Adhere to safety principles and work in a safe manner.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATES


Possession and maintenance of a valid class C California driver's license or the ability to provide alternative transportation as approved by the appointing authority, along with a safe driving record.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

- College coursework in finance, accounting, or a related field.

EXAMINATION PROCESS
Applications will be screened competitively based on the minimum qualifications for this position.

Qualified candidates will be invited to participate in an oral examination process.

SELECTION PROCESS


Candidates who achieve a passing score on the examination will be placed on an eligibility list for up to one year, in accordance with the City's Civil Service Rules and Administrative Policies.

Top candidates will be invited for a selection interview with the department.


Any candidate selected by the hiring department will be required to complete a pre-employment process, which may include a background check and medical examinations.

All newly hired employees will undergo fingerprinting to check conviction history. A conviction history will not necessarily disqualify an applicant, but failure to disclose such history may result in employment refusal or termination.

Positions subject to Department of Transportation regulations will require a pre-employment drug test and random drug and alcohol testing.
